Disney with Diabetes?

At age 3 1/2 he could be quite comfortable in a stroller at WDW - get a clip-on fan to keep him cool, or one of those spray mister things. I don't know of any 3 1/2 yr olds that walk 6 hours at WDW, they all use strollers!

I don't either, but he's 42 inches tall and 42 pounds... so unfortunately he doesn't fit into too many strollers! :)

I am having a Joovy Caboose Ultralight Sit-n-Stand stroller delivered to our resort this week, it should be us there by a day and be waiting for us when we arrive! :thumbsup2

I would make sure you bring plenty of simple sugars such as juice boxes and glucagon. We actually needed it at MGM and thankfully I had it on hand.
I would also add your endo to your contact list on your cell phone in case of questions. Watch numbers while swimming because they will really drop and can for several hours. You might want to decrease nph or lantus as much as 20%, but check with doctor first. Bring many snacks because of increase in activity.
Hope your vacation is great. We will be across from you at the BWV starting Monday.

I am so sorry to hear about your son....my 6 ds was just diagnosed with type1 too. I already have a 12 year old who is has been a diabetic since she was 3.The carb counting thing isn't too bad. Good Luck

I would love to talk to you about MANY things, but first and foremost... how did you go about getting additional meters? It makes a lot of sense to have at least one backup with you at all times, I just hadn't thought of it yet. Do I take that up with my insurance company?

We actually have an extra meter from CHOP, they gave us one that they trained us on before finding out my insurance wouldn't cover that brand. We picked up a 2nd one at the pharmacy, so now we have two meters but only have strips for one of them. I looked into buying the strips "off the shelf", but at over $100 per 100 strips, that is cost prohibitive. I guess it would be a decent "back up" option though.

Thanks again!
Chris

You have several options to get extra meters... The meter companies want you to have thier meter because the strips are so expensive. Find out what strips your insurance company covers and call the meter co. or visit thier site and ask for a meter... they almost all always have a free promo going on to the public but I got Chloe's Minimed Links all by calling and asking for them. They were linked to her pump and insurance would only pay for one but I got 3 of them from Minimed. Now she uses a One Touch that links to her pump and once again insurance would only cover one but One Touch sent me 3 last month for free. I need 3 for her dad, sitter and school plus one for home. Never pay for a meter.... its like the diabetics golden rule... haha. I have drawers full of them that Chloe got at Diabetes Camp over the years. They give each kid a backpack jammed with goodies and there are always 2 meters in them... plus they have a vendor fair and the vendors wont let you walk be without taking one. We have tried pretty much all of the different meters this way. I actually gave a box of the ones I hadnt opened and tried to Children's earlier this year.... and I still have about twenty.... :confused3

I just wanted to mention, we got test strips for our meters at hocks.com

My cat had diabetes, so no insurance to cover the strips. Bring lots of extra test strips because of the different environment.

Ok I have type 1 diabetes. I am pretty good with following my diet and checking my sugar and taking my shots. Any suggestions about where to do to eat? It is my first time ever going so I really want to enjoy myself without worrying about my diabetes. I want to eat and ride the rides and have fun.

Hi and :welcome: to both DisBoards and disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #3 has a lot of links and is arraned alphabetically; you will probably want to look aa both dietary restrictions and diabetes.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

Hi and you will find lots of info here. I think in the long run you will find that eating at Disney is not unlike eating around your hometown when eating out. The difference might be the amount of exercise you are getting. I suggest asking questions before ordering, familiarize yourself with the menus of the restaurants that you think you will be eating at before you go. You can get that information online. I am most famliar with allears, but other Disney related sites offer the info. Stay hydrated, and check you BS often, carry with you your gluco rescue tablets or what ever form you use. I will assume that you will be with people who know what to do if you BS drops, but just in case go over the routine, if for no other reason as a double check that you have what you need to deal with your BS no matter what the level. I personally carry it all in a fanny pack, very handy and no real chance to get lost.

Oh, yes! Relax and have a great time!

Welcome to the Disboards! I think the best site to get you started is: http://allears.net/pl/diabetes.htm That was written by parents of two teenagers with type 1 and covers the bases pretty well.

There are places on the internet (here on the Dis I think and at Allearsnet) to look up the menus before you go - if that will help you with meal planning. We count carbs and give insulin based on what we eat and we've learned to estimate the carb count at WDW - because they don't have carb counts on most of their food.

Make sure to take a fast acting sugar (or a few sources) with you everywhere, your test kit, etc. You will probably need to test more often.

Have fun!:thumbsup2

Thanks for the information. I printed some menus at some places where we are going to eat. My mom and I have looked at them. I am going with my sister and she knows a little about diabetes but she is learning. I have a case that I keep all my stuff in so I will have that with me at all time. It has my meter, my tabs for low sugar and my insulin pens. I can not wait until October now.
