Disney vs other places - cost

Do you go to a higher tier hotel at Disney then if you go to another place like Paris?
Do you spend more at Disney then you would at another place?

Yes, I spend more at WDW, for the same Tier hotel anywhere else is way cheaper than what WDW charges. I've spent much less at a 4star oceanfront resort in Hawaii or Ft Lauderdale than what WDW charges for their deluxe. I couldn't say about Paris, it's been many years since I was there. I have no idea what current price is.

It's really two separate questions. We tend to stay at higher tier resorts than WDW even offers (I consider Four Seasons to be higher end than Grand Floridian). I typically spend less at WDW, though, as I work the discounts for our trips. Cost just depends on which locale your visiting. I've spent much more money in other places than WDW.

I'm honestly kind of shocked at how expensive hotels are in other places we have visited. I often think to myself that I could be staying at CSR or even sometimes YC for the kind of money hotels (nice, but not extravagant) are demanding. They're often not even in super exciting places, we just have to go there for one reason or another.

Well, we haven't been to Disney yet. But the hotels we are looking at are probably 3x more expensive than I would pay elsewhere. I generally stay around the $150 range in major cities (in the US) and the $200 mark abroad. Sometimes it takes major deal hunting or planning far in advance, but it can definitely be done! Heck, we're going to Europe this summer and are paying less than half the cost of a Deluxe Disney resort per night (in the city center of major cities).

Heck, we're going to Europe this summer and are paying less than half the cost of a Deluxe Disney resort per night (in the city center of major cities).

We're going to Dublin and Norway. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. We're paying just under $200/night in Oslo and Bergen with the Thon family of hotels. They even provide some meals!

This is why we haven't done Disney yet. Because if we budget we can do Europe for the same price!

IMO, Disney hotels are ridiculously expensive. I wouldn't pay that kind of money anywhere else.

I answered 'Yes' meaning that i pay far more for a night's stay at WDW then I do for a night in a hotel in Rome, Paris or Germany. London, I sometimes pay more for a nice room - it varies. Most cities in Europe have gorgeous rooms for a reasonable price. You just have to do your homework and book early to get one. We stayed in a lovely suite in Rome, a two minute walk from the Pantheon with a rooftop balcony about twice the size of a GF room and gorgeous views for about the price of a moderate resort in WDW. It was a great find and simply incredible! It also included an amazing breakfast every day!

We usually pay about the same at hotels outside of Disney as we do on discounted Epcot Deluxe rooms, especially in larger and expensive cities. Our NYC hotel room is on par with what we are spending at the Yacht Club, and it isn't anywhere near as nice, but we really needed a very specific location that drastically limited our choices. Our last stay in San Francisco was even more expensive, and Napa and D.C were both on par with the Yacht Club room. We are in the early stages of looking at hotels in Tokyo and Paris and they also around what we usually pay at the Yacht Club, although like I said it is very early stages so we may find something cheaper. Now when we travel to cities like Houston, Austin, and Buffalo we spend a lot less for higher end accommodations. I think a lot also has to do with how far in advance we can book. We do a lot of more last minute trips so it can sometimes be harder to get good deals especially if you need a really specific location which we often do.

OT but have a wonderful time in Norway! Bergen is fun, make sure to take the funicular, and enjoy the fish market.
In Oslo, my recommendations are to go to Viking Ship Museum (we took a ferry there), the Opera House (it is meant to be climbed on, and many use it as a sunbathing/picnic spot) and Akershus Fortress. Lastly, my favorite is Vigeland Park. It has so many beautiful and unique sculptures.

We've stayed at Ritz Carltons that were 1/3-1/2 the cost of the GF or Poly or BC with breakfast or resort credits included. But, Ritz Carltons don't have any theming and aren't attached to the most magical place on earth.

When we travel to places other then WDW, we pay a lot less for our hotel room... even if it's a higher star rating.

My family went to Paris a few years ago over Christmas, and we ended up paying about the same for that trip as I am paying for my upcoming trip to Disney this August. The trip to Paris included with my husband and I and two sons, our trip to Disney this August will be just me and my sons (and extended family, but I'm not paying for their trips!). Our flight to Paris with the bulk of our cost. We rented a fantastic apartment a block from the Seine for a little over $1500 for the week. I'm paying well over that for our eight nights at Disney this August.

That said, I'm a bargain shopper. We tend to either rent apartments or houses when we travel, which I find saves us money. If we stay at a hotel, I will often get a four-star or above the at Priceline at greatly reduce savings.

But I would spend more for a hotel in Paris than a hotel at Disney. There really isn't any such thing as a bad on property hotel in Disney. Location and amenities matter a lot more in a city like Paris. That's the main reason I would stay in a five star hotel.
