Yes, you have to have your checking account with them. If you don't have one already I'd google a coupon and see if there's any around. I got $200 for opening my primary account with them with direct deposit. Today I got an offer for $100 just to open an account and deposit $100 new money into it. That's going RIGHT to the Disney fund.
My husband and I each have a Disney Visa with lots of points accrued. We're planning our first trip with the kids and will be transferring our points to the card. But, aside from using the card in the gift shops to buy souvenirs, how do you use it? I've read people's posts that they've used it to pay for their rooms or dining plans. How is this done? I thought you had to pay online at time of booking for those things...
I have a Disney card as well, but I pay mine off weekly. That way I am not in shock at the end of the month AND I don't get myself in a bind. I can also put more on it. You can pay the balance every 2 to 3 days and the points still count. For example...I have a few charges on it now and today I will pay my electric bill and internet. Friday I will pay the entire card off and start again! I didn't pay off my vacation so that I could send the payments and get the extra points. We are averaging about 14pts a month. I think it has made me more accountable for what I spend too. We seem to have more in the account then normal...
I do have one question though...I was told that instead of ordering your card that you could just get it at Disney when you start your vacation. They said that they front desk could put it on a card for you. Does anyone know about this....?
I got in on the 200 bonus points when I got the card back in April. When we took our Marathon Trip last week, I had $250 dollars to take along for spending money. Ended up charging ADR tips and souvenirs to the room and then paying the balance with the reward dollars at the end of the stay.
Given the number of cards now that give you 1% cash, or some other reward, is the Disney Visa better? If they are giving you the same 1%, with an expiration, and you have to order it, how is that better than getting cash back? One can still use cash at Disney, no?

I can see your point and I tend to agree for the most part. In fact I stopped using my Disney Visa for a few months when my other Chase card upped my rewards to 3% for several months. But the big deal with these particular cards, at least for us, is that you got a $200 card when opening the account. Between DH, myself, two adult daughters, and my mom (whose accounts I handle) that was $900 free and clear (DD only got a $100 offer).
And DD and DS and friends are headed to Disney for their graduations in June and I feel better handing them one gift card instead of a wad of cash. They each have a $200 one, plus I'll add on what we've accumulated for the last six months to two more cards that we had left over from our Nov. trip.
We only go every couple of years so after their trip, I probably won't bother with that card so much anymore. I can get cash back from other cards so that's what I generally stick with.
