Disney visa charges for cruises, mixed results on 6 months no interest financing

I'm trying to understand the specific rules for the 6-month, no-interest financing on my Disney Visa card, as its rules seem inconsistent.

Here's what I've experienced:

Always Financed: The initial deposit and final payment for the cruise itself.

Sometimes Financed: Purchases of onboard credit. It seems random whether these qualify.

Never Financed: Upgrade at the port to a concierge room, the additional cost wasn't covered.

Has anyone figured out what determines if a purchase qualifies for financing? I want to use the Disney Visa only for purchases that get me financing, otherwise I'll use a different card with better rewards if it won't work.

Vacation packages purchased through Disney (or an eligible travel agency) using a Disney Visa get the 6-months no interest deal. A cruise is considered a package even if it does not include airfare or hotel.

When we have had our travel agent book ground transportation or paid gratuities before a cruise, that has been considered part of our package and qualified for the deal. The cost of upgrading to a more expensive room before arriving at the port has also qualified.

When I have purchased a celebration package for the room using the DCL website, that has not qualified for the deal. Nothing purchased during a cruise (including upgrades purchased at the port) will be considered part of the cruise package.

The reason onboard credit sometimes qualifies and sometimes doesn’t may relate to how it is coded when purchased. As a gift, it wouldn’t count. As prepayment of cruise expenses, it might. I don’t know how to control how a purchase is coded.

I'm new to the card and trying to figure it out, too. I put $200 OBC on the card for an upcoming cruise and it didn't get the special financing. I was kind of testing it to see if it would before I purchased additional OBC.

Adding port transfers through Costco (my TA) didn't get the financing, either. I'm wondering if the balance will get it when I pay off another cruise that i have booked through Costco.

Was the OBC purchased through the online gifts? Or did you go through your TA to add it? I’ve only ever added “prepaid gratuities” (and I can set the amount) but it always codes under the financing. As PP mentioned, purchases through the gifts doesn’t qualify.

How much was your total for transfers? It must be over $101 (I think) to qualify.

The OBC was done through gifts. My transfers were $180 and done through Costco.

I probably don't have enough time to experiment with adding OBC for my upcoming cruise through my TA, but I will see how it codes for my next one when I add my transfers.

Btw, has anyone purchased a future cruise certificate recently and had it give the interest free financing?

I assume you mean the $250 placeholder. I purchased one in April and it has the 0% financing.

Keep in mind that Disney Visa does charge a fee for their "free" financing. I don't recall if it's a flat fee or if it varies by the amount financed. My current fee for a few thousand of Disney Visa financing is about $17 per month. That's about $100 if you finance for the whole 6 months. Not as expensive as credit card interest, but worth being aware of.

Are you referring to the Chase plan it feature?

I think that is different than the Disney 6 months promotional financing at 0%

Yes Disney vacation packages and cruises are 0% for 6 months and chase plan its have a fee.

Interesting. I wonder if things have changed or if it makes a difference based on when we got the card.

It is more than likely whatever robot is reviewing the charges misread the code or something. When I upgraded my mom's room to a family verandah after booking, it didn't code the payment as 0 percent, but I didn't feel like calling to make a stink. I'm sure if I had called a person would have fixed it.

ChatGPT just said that pre-paying onboard credit does count towards the 6 months no interest on Disney Visa. So, that must be true, right???!!!

I have pre paid onboard credit on my Disney Visa for 2-3 cruises a year, for years. I have always had 0 percent interest on that amount. Anything charged on the cruise however does NOT get the 0 percent, so I have always just over estimated my onboard credit and get a refund of the difference.

I'll give that a try on my spring cruise.

How do you do the prepaid onboard credit?

For our cruise on the Disney Treasure in February, I tried to add onboard credit via the Onboard Gifts website, and it did not get the 0% financing for 6 months. We’re sailing on the Fantasy in August and I’d love to add prepaid credit if it gets the financing.

The last time I added onboard credit was 2023, but I called DCL -- I didn't do it online. I think the website automatically codes it as a gift but going through an agent means it looks like a DCL reservation so it's eligible for the 0% financing.

If that's changed since then, I'd love to know since I plan to add some onboard credit for an upcoming October cruise.

I just call and do it through them. I'm not sure if doing it through the app is different, but figure the hassle of calling is worth the 6 months. I just did that for it cruise 3 months ago in April.

Oh wow. How do I do this?

Edit: I just saw that others already asked this! Thanks
