Even though it’s part of the "happiest place on earth," Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, a 700-acre, 784-site park operated by Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla., still faces the same challenges as many private campgrounds and RV parks.

That means providing more space for slideouts as well as offering high technology access. Fort Wilderness Marketing Manager Taylor Meringolo said wireless Internet, or Wi-Fi, is something the park’s staff is currently considering at Fort Wilderness.

“We are evaluating our options but haven’t decided which technology would best satisfy our guests,” she said, noting the park opened in 1971.

Park staff also is looking at ways to improve the space around sites for satellite dishes and slideouts, Meringolo said. While site space and configurations continue to be tested, some spaces have been changed to accommodate big rigs, offering hookups for water, sewer, 50-amp electricity and barbeques, Meringolo said. In addition, preferred sites have cable TV.

Part of the work to make site size adjustments includes a tree relocation plan that allows for turn radius and slideouts by moving trees to other areas of the resort, while keeping privacy with trees around the sites. Pull-thru sites also are being tested.

Unlike some of the high-end RV resorts, however, Fort Wilderness also offers accomodations for smaller campers. Travel trailers, popup campers and tents coexist with high-end trailers with slideouts and Class A motorhomes. In addition to Fort Wilderness’ 784 sites, there’s also a primitive group camping area.

All sites have level, paved pads with a coquina rock bed, charcoal grill, picnic table and hook-ups for water, electric, sewer and cable. The sites are all located near air-conditioned comfort stations with restrooms, private showers, laundry facilities, ice dispensers and pay phones.

There are also 409 “Wilderness Cabins” – luxury park model cabins – that come equipped with daily housekeeping services.

Wow that was some interesting reading, thanks for sharing.

Always nice to know they are working to keep improving FW...thanks for sharing!

Great news! Do you think maybe they would put in a hot tub? Would't that be great?

I'm hoping that the upgrading of the electric as well as the addition of pull through sites is just the first signs of an overall upgrade. As has been mentioned many times an upgrade to the pool area is in order.

Another vote for a pool renovation too! I have even considered staying at WL for one nite next trip so my kids can experience one of the other pools. FW is the only place we have ever stayed on site so it is very disappointing no to have a nice pool like to other resorts.

We miss river country.... does any one know what they did with that area?
4yrs ago we stayed at POFQ and didn't make it over to see Fort Wilderness.. ( 2 yrs ago we stayed off resort at freinds condo.. bad experience, never again)

I vote for themed pools and hot tubs..

Hi Tim! I've seen you over at the Open Roads\Folding Trailersforum at RV.net!

I am also wondering about River Country. When we stayed at Ft. Wilderness in 1981 it was closed for the month we were there. I had really wanted to try it. I never got back to WDW till 2000 and by that time it was closed for good.

Please open River Country again. It's my one unfulfilled childhood dream.

when we talked to other cm they said it will be closed forever.
they have no plans to reopen it in the near future,it ill cost to much.

We just got back, and I was actually a little sad to see how they've "made room" for the larger rigs, at least in the 300 loop. The past three years we've stayed in site 349 or thereabouts, and this year there was NO tree cover left, our rig was totally out in the sun, which made it hard for the a.c. to keep up. Next time, we'll switch to the inside of the loop, where they seem to have left the natural tree cover. Maybe it's because I don't have the luxury of slides (just one awning!), but I hate to see them cut so much of the natural beauty down. Still love it, just want my spanish moss!
