Disney Unveils Digital Media Player; Will Play Movies

September 19, 2006: 7:30 a.m. EST

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Walt Disney Co. said it is launching a new personal digital media player offering full-length movies, digital music and TV shows.

The new device, called the Disney Mix Max, will retail at $99.99 and be available in stores in October.

Disney shares closed Monday down 0.8% at $30.06.

so this is exactly what I have been waiting for... I didn't like that Ipod video doesn't play full length movies..... I will be buying one

sure it does... I have an iPod Video and rip from my own DVDs using Podner. And now that they sell full length movies on iTunes they improved the firmware to support it and games at a higher level.

Really?... ( i know this is off topic but) how is the battery life on the iPod video?.. Is it possible to get through a full length movie?

iPod 5G 30GB now runs for 14 hours of audio playback, 4 hours of photo playback, and 3.5 hours of on-screen video playback time, while 80GB runs for 20 hours of audio playback, 6 hours of photo playback, and 6.5 hours of video playback time.

But a 30g iPod is still $300 I believe, a 60g is $400.

This is only $100. I'd like to see the specs on it for comparison purposes.

Supposedly, Apple will be launching a widescreen iPod at some point in the reasonably near future.

Its also interesting that the movies offered through iTunes are Disney movies.

Disney (DIS - news - Cramer's Take) is expanding its consumer electronics line for kids with the launch of its Mix Max personal digital media player in October.

The Mix Max will use tiny digital media cards for playing full-length movies, digital music, TV shows and viewing photos. The new gadget will be priced at less than $100.

"With the Disney Mix Stick, we proved that kids were ready for digital music," said Chris Heatherly, head of global electronics at Disney's consumer products unit. "The plug-and-play experience also proved to be a winning feature for parents who welcomed the idea of not having to download music for their kids."

Disney initially entered the digital music player market last fall with the Mix Stick, a flash-based MP3 player, which sold out before the holiday season.
