Disney unions split before contract vote

Unions = legalized extortion. No one is making anyone work at Disney (or any other place where there is a union). If you don't like the pay, the conditions, or any other compensation, don't work for them - pure and simple. It's a personal choice. You think you can do a better job of creating jobs, and compensating employees then start a business of your own, but stop extorting from companies who took the risk to start a business in the first place! If Disney doesn't provide sufficient benefits/compensation to keep sufficient staff to run their enterprise, the parks will shut down. Obviously, there is sufficient demand for their jobs, so they are obviously providing some perk that people like!

You don't...

Considering what I pay for a room (or in my case my DVC membership), entrance to the parks, food while I stay there, etc......

I would have hoped that Disney would pay the cast members more than they do. I've always found the Cast Members to be good people. While I would be outraged if the unions went on strike while I was on vacation, they have to be able to threaten the strike or they get rolled by Disney.

I do find it odd though that at least this story purports that they are getting 3+% raises. I haven't seen a bigger than 2% raise in years.

3% works out ot be about 452 bucks a year for the minimum wage...

I get what you're saying...but 3% of nothing is still nothing.

That annual raise can be covered by just over 5 one day tickets (5.17) at the ridiculous current rate of 87.33 a ticket (including tax...but the number is still pretty true)

This is ridiculous. Unions = extortion? Wow, you must have missed the portion of your History class that emphasized the importance of Unions in American History. So with your logic, your employer can choose to change conditions, not give you a raise, etc. and you have to be happy with it or leave? So the housekeeper at Disney can come to work and find out that Disney has decided to eliminate their benefits, change their work day from 9 hours to 12 hours and give them a 1% raise. And these people are supposed to take it or leave it? No, that's ridiculous. Unions are there to protect your rights. Plain and simple. And to make sure companies don't screw you over with this logic. Wow, I can't believe you even said that.

That's exactly what happened to me and I left after a couple of months when I found a better job. That's what the "pursuit of happiness" in the declaration of independence is talking about....a person should be free to pursue what makes them happy. I also had the option of staying. Someone else is doing the job that I once did and (I've met the guy) he loves it. It was just no longer for me. I just don't get how people think that they are entitled to a job for life. Disney should pay a vendor in a retail store in MK more than someone at Wal Mart because the associate at Wal Mart isn't tasked with helping create "magic." However, at some point, a person working retail is still just checking people out and doesn't deserve to be making a huge salary for an unskilled job. You work somewhere, improve yourself in the process, then move up or move on. You gain great experience on your present job that you get to use in your next job, whether it be with the same company or a different one.

I said nothing of entitlement to a job for life. I don't agree with that either, but I also know people have rights. There are laws and Rights in place to protect people from employers that will try and screw them out of their rights. I do believe people are entitled to their rights.

Exactly like the right to work and the right to not work, elsewise is called slavery or a variation of such.

And if you choose the right to work, you have Rights associated with that decision. If I need to provide those to you, I can. The basic rights are the rights to a clean and safe work environment, the right to fair wages, etc.

In this case the wages are absolutely fair. They are above the minimum. Like I said if they don't like the job they can leave. That's their freedom to exercise. Nobody is forcing anyone to work there.

I generally agree with your arguments but this is where i diverge with you...

the term "Rights" are analogous to alot of ideas these days that actually aren't a part of our countries founding and principles.

Most of our law comes from statute and court decisions...not from a couple of 200 year old letters on parchment that talk of "rights"

who determines what a "right" after so much time and evolution?

these are philosophical things that nobody can answer...but in this argument...i have to disagree.

OSHA and state agencies govern what is considered "safe" working conditons...but they make constant concessions to not stand in the way of business. So as long as there is some sort of government mandated concession...you don't necessarily get a right to a "safe" working environment...you just might get another quarted an hour.

Second...the government guarantees a "minimum" wage...not a "fair wage". Fair wages have been a dream in this country for 225 years and have never been fully realized...and we are starting to devolve back toward more inequality in earnings. The fact that several states still have "state" minimum wages that are below the federal (and therefore not applicable) as a means of "bucking the yankees" and sticking their tongue out at D.C. is good example of how screwed up we are in regards to pay. Fair has never been on the table...because the minimum wage has never provided more than borderline abject poverty levels of pay. That causes things like Section 8 and public assistance that basically redistrubutes the wealth anyway via taxes....that isn't really fair.

generally i'm with you...just not so much here
