I have a friend who is @ WDW now and he says he is hearing that they are going to start charging for PastPasses like Universal?? Anyone, else hear this??

I don't think there is any immediate danger of thsi happening. Although I do remember a thread a while back where folks were discussing a tiered fast pass system. It seemd the theories included giving extra or immediate fastpasses to resort guests or charging for the immediate fast pass feature.

I think someone mentioned in that thread that Disney filed some patent paperwork. For all we know that could have been a tactic to stop others from using the same type of system rather than plans to implement at their parks.

At Disneyland this week-a cast member informed us that disney research shows no true satisfaction from management or park guests with the current fastpass system. He said that the research showed "that the overall experience for guests shows limited or no real time saving" since virtually all guests now use the FP system.

-I was complaining of the lack of fastpass at Toy Story Mania where we stood for 45 minutes on a 90 degree Anaheim Morning-fifteen minutes after rope drop.
He indicated there was no discussion of adding FP to Toy Story-and he said they had begun shutting down fastpass kiosks- Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean, and even the new Ariel attraction all had FP cues that were not "open."

As a repeat guest to WDW, and a tour plan follower-I would be deeply disappointed to see the removal of the FP system-or a pay to play system. However, at nearly $100 a day per park guest-there should be a way to manage guests expectations for wait times. With all of the cool apps-we currently seem to be defeating the current system. Time for Disney to mouse up for the new challenge.

I had always heard the opposite. That most guests DO NOT know about FP or don't understand how it works. And most dissatisfaction came from guests seeing others using it and not knowing it was available to them.

I agree with the idea of making a "faster" FP. However I think they can just improve the current FP wait time.

Actually, these two statements are in agreement. If guests don't know or use the system, than most guests do not see a real time savings.....

I doubt that you will see FP go away or be profit based. Even if it doesn't work ideally, it is a great public relations piece to say that they offer it. I could see it being revamped and it likely will be with the whole ride reservations talk that WDW announced. FP is not a new technology and could be improved, so maybe you will see a new FP system that is easier/more accessible. A "smart" fast pass system could monitor wait times and dispense fast passes accordingly. So if you walk up to a ride with long wait time, it might work normally, but if there are short wait times, they will dispense less fast passes and increase the return time (encouraging people to use the standby instead of the fast pass).

The point of FP is to get the guest out of line and doing something else (like shopping) so charging for it would work against its purpose.

Ah, it may be the point but in practice...reportedly the bottom line did not significantly show a change in spending habits - it may have only changed the time in which they did it.

I'm pretty sure I recall a number of years ago that the head of Disneyland at the time despised FP, it it seemed like they were going to eventually remove it. But it also seemed to be utilized differently.

At WDW that's more the case, but they talked to a Disneyland CM where most people are locals and DO know how FP works

The good old KISS system....first come, first served.

I've certainly gotten my share of dirty looks running past a 90-minute line with my fastpass! :rotfl:
