Still released during this 50% stock drop that’s been mentioned in this thread

I think they just got used to the good years where Disney was ruling everything. That isn't sustainable and never would be. The lingering effects of the pandemic are definitely felt, and that includes the heavy focus on streaming canibalizing box office results.

Actually, DIS has had two fairly recent periods of significant price appreciation. From the mid 80s to the late 90s, the stock went from about $2 to $30 (split adjusted). That was the Eisner era Then in the mid to late 00s to the mid 10's, it went from about $30 to $100, after Iger took over. There was a period of rocky performance toward the end of the Eisner reign, coinciding with a hostile bid from Comcast.

In a surprise move, cable TV giant Comcast Corp. proposed early Wednesday to buy Walt Disney Co., the iconic media and entertainment powerhouse that owns the ABC and ESPN television networks, movie studios and theme parks, for stock valued at about $54 billion.
Glad that 30-40 years ago counts as recent history. Even that was more of a steady with the market growth.

The Iger era is probably the only one where there was significant growth of the stock. Drastically grew the media portfolio of the company which is where investors see more growth opportunity. Unfortunately that has now come in the crosshairs of uncertainty which investors don’t care for so they pulled back and are starting away.

If you study the history of companies, it isn't unusual at all for periods of prosperity and innovation to be followed by lean times. I think management gets lazy and forgets what got them the prosperity to begin with. They start thinking that it's just automatic.

Disney is still #1 at the domestic box office.

Eisner also began the practice of steadily raising the prices at the parks, which went straight to the bottom line. Sales of videos were a big earner in the mid 80s to mid 90s.

Eisner also created the gaping disparity between CEO salary and the rest of those who work at TWDC.

I agree.

In my opinion, some of Disney’s “roots” include creativity and really good storytelling. In some of the movies they’ve put out the past couple of years, the storytelling has not been very good. Look at the Pixar disaster of the Buzz Lightyear movie. I saw that one IN the movie theater. It dragged on and on forever. Lacked all of the stuff that’s made Pixar movies great in the past. The live action remakes? Bleh. Come up with new stories.

Occasionally, they’ve put out some pretty awesome stuff. Like Encanto. Or all of the Star Wars TV series that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have been putting out.

Disney needs to stay out of politics. And so do we. 😉
I agree about the remakes but sadly Disney will keep making them as long as people still pay to go see them. Lion King (gags), Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin all grossed over a billion dollars.

After decades of a pretty stable TV era, it’s a totally new frontier now. Nobody knows how this chapter settles and which business models ultimately win. I’d think that’s the biggest question mark for investors.

I’m less worried about Disney’s ability to repeat successes like Frozen, or profit from parks and merch. Those things seem dependable. Disney always manages to get them back on track.

Dis+, piracy, worldwide sports, distribution, production investment/profit, etc. Frontierland.

Yeah, but overall box-office is in a slump. It's not just a Disney problem, though it seems like they have been affected most because they were riding so high.

I dislike every single one of those live-active movie. I couldn't get past the opening scene in Lion King.
What's really sad is that the opening shot of the sun rising is the ONLY part that is actually live action. Everything else was animated/filmed in the Unity engine.

I agree though. Lion King 2019 is the worst Disney movie I've seen in years. I was shocked as to how bad that was.

Correct, it’s a current battle of which industry is dying faster. Theatrical or Linear media.

The fact that Disney is tied to both of them makes investors stay away for the time being.

Fine with me. I am so sick to death of people crying and arguing about this. The conversations about this on these boards and other sites have given me a migraine.

The "controversy" about the live action Little Mermaid movie was truly one of the most embarrassing displays I've ever seen from Disney fans online.
OMG...if you don't get it, then you're not going to. It's not that the mermaid was black, or white or purple...it's that the movie was trying to be so politically correct. I want a Disney movie that is not so damn concerned about what every single person from every single subgroup feels...let's not hurt anybody's feeling....just a movie that is strictly to entertain the family. I won't see any of these awful live remakes. ESPECIALLY the awful Snow White coming up. You gotta admit, that thing sounds like it will stink to high heavens.

My migraine just came back.

Lmao you think Star Wars doesn't have politics? It's THE "punch the nazi" IP.

Why should a movie hurt anybody's feelings though? That's no virtue. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to be a little sympathetic toward people.

See @Mexacajun ? Scoobysgirl wanted to say something and then said it! No subtext required. Thank you Scoobysgirl for admitting it out loud.

"Children's movies" have a built-in audience unconcerned with quality. Most of them will make money, many of them a LOT of money. If they're based on something the parents already know, all the better for the box office receipts.

Have you watched it? There were no more politics in this one than the original.

You're not wrong. It's why while the Mario Bros movie is a solid 6/10 experience when looking at it critically, it made over 1.3 billion dollars.
