Oooh! thanks for the update! Now to decide if I want to fight the crowds.....

Just read last night that the new DS location at Yorkdale is opening Sat July 28 at 9:30am. Mickey and Minnie will be there to take photos and do the opening celebration. The store will be close to 4500sq ft!!!!

2 weeks ago the store in Newmarket opened. They had the same official opening ceremony, free Mickey Ears to the first 500, and Mickey and Minnie where there for the meet and greet.

Now... as tempting as it sounds. I wouldn't go back.

Reason
We arrived at 8:30 am for the opening at 9:00. We were already about 400 people back.
Mickey and Minnie were there for the official ceremony, turn the key, etc. Then they started letting people in the store. They let small groups at a time, to not avoid a rush... We didn't get in the store until about 10:30.
Right when we got in, I asked a CM where we can meet Mickey and Minnie, and they said they were NOT in the store... :scared1:
We waited 2 hours - just to walk in the store? :furious:
The meet and greet was at the centre Court of the mall from 11:00 - 3:00. We took a quick walk through the store, since we waited so long to get in, then headed to centre court. Wouldn't ya know it... there was a line there too.
That line was close to 2 hours as well.
If I knew the meet and greet were in a separate spot, I would have got right in that line. Anyways, we left, did some grocery shopping, and returned to the mall around 1:00 pm. At this point the line for the meet and greet was about 20 minutes. We waited.

If it is the Store you want to get into - here's my advice... Even though the "official" opening is Saturday, the soft opening is likely the Wednesday before (It was in Newmarket).
If it's the meet and greet you are looking for, find out where it will be, and get right in that line.
If you have to be part of the mob to say you were there, in the store when it officially opened... by all means, wait in the line... at least you are now informed of the process... :thumbsup2

...And I would also expect the Yorkdale location to be MUCH more crowded then the Upper Canada Location....

On the up side (not to be negative Nancy)... they staff there was spot on Disney customer service. Entertaining people in the lines, trivia, and songs, free giveaways (keychains, etc)...

There was also some big wigs from Orlando... To ensure it was a 100% Disney experience.

Exciting! This is definitely something I want to check out. Not so much wanting to meet Mickey and Minnie, but 4500 sq/ft is HUGE and should hopefully be stocked with lots of good things!

Still waiting to find out when the new store in the Scarborough Town Centre is scheduled to open. :confused3

Has that even been confirmed? I know there was an anointment earlier in the year about it then they started work on the yorkdale one, so I figured the STC one was dead.

Disney Store is moving into the old HMV location. I was just at Scarborough Town Centre and saw the sign!

I'll keep everyone posted once a date goes up :cool1:

My friend just got a job at this location. He isn't thrilled with it but I sure am! He thinks it will be too corporate but I would love to work at Disney! :lmao:

Thanks it does say on the Yorkdale website that they will be at center court for the M&G. Not a big deal for me since I can meet them at WDW next month for the hundredth time LOL. But if you say the soft opening is before the offical then I'll head to that instead. I would love to work at the disney Store again now that's it owned by disney again.

I work with Yorkdale and as of now, I shouldn't be saying anything but how can I not here :goodvibes, we are planning our soft opening of the Disney Store to be July 23rd. Granted it could change, but thats the date we have with them right now.

I was pushing and pushing for us to get the DS back and am so excited to see its finally come to be!!! Though, this won't be very good for my Vinylmation addiction.....I'll be going there almost every day :scared:

I already peek through the crack in the door often to see the progress

Thank you so much for the info!!!! I have inventory at work that morning so maybe I'll get out early that day and head into T.O.

For sure!!!
I just took a look inside the hoarding a little bit ago and what little I could see, they are installing the "animated" trees. I will keep you updated on the soft opening as soon as I hear more.

Oooh... this is tempting. With only a month until our vacation at that point I'm wondering if we should brave it! Alas, we haven't been to Yorkdale since we moved out of Toronto (to Oakville) so maybe we'll try. DD will be very excited to see Mickey and Minnie.

For those who haven't been to one of these... the account above was pretty accurate to our experience when Square One opened. I think we saw Goofy and Pluto but the characters rotated and we only met Goofy. The line for the actual store was crazy, 2 hours and the M&G was in the centre court. It was fun!

Sounds just like when we opened the orginal stores in Toronto 20 years ago! I helped open the orginal 4 stores and was on the management team at Square one. Each one had an exciting grand opening with the characters. I remember Square One was lined up from the food court and out the door. People were pretty patient about waiting, but we did get compaints from the other stores as the line blocked the stores. Is the merchandise changing and going back to more of a selection of Disney stuff and collectibles verses a Disney toy store?

They are nothing like the old days the tagline is "make it the best 30mins of your child's day" so that pretty much tells you it's a kids store with a very limited selection of adult items.

I wouldn't worry about lines to meet mickey and mine blocking stores Yorkdale is actually very good about establishing lines for store openings and other time when lines get crazy. They will actually tape out a Que on the floor if they have too. They also have carpets that have a line marked out on them that they use for Santa and I have also seen them used in front of the apple store too.
