Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

The CBR to Epcot line counts as 3 with the 2 turns when talking to Doppelmayr.

Strange way to count since it's one continuous cable and people can't get off at BW.

Counting by segment doesn’t seem all that strange to me, turns are fairly significant since they require additional stations. But it’s how they generally talk about it when I speak to them.

The biggest bottleneck in all of WDW is still the MK parking lot. The boats and monorail just don't have enough capacity. Supplementing with buses helps but it's still a long wait after fireworks. Skyliner from MK to parking lot seems like a no-brainer (I guess that would serve Poly too). You could extend it to WL/BRV/CCV and maybe even Fort Wilderness and Reflections from there. Some variation of that anyway...

I agree and have posted about this before. If the Skyliner works like it’s supposed to I think it would be great to have a line from TTC to MK entrance. I envision it running along the east side of Seven Seas Lagoon

Why not go straight across? 7 Seas Lagoon isn't that deep and rescue over water isn't that big of an issue. The only disadvantage would be that you couldn't put stations at other resorts.

I have to believe you might be able to replace the monorail capacity with a skyliner or funicular (new build) for less than buying new trains. Really I think only the iconic status of the monorail is saving it. A furnicular could be made to look like a monorail as well.

WDW is really a great application for a Furnicular. Their main use is normally inclines and normally they don't operate around many corners. Also the capacity is relatively low because most of the ones I've seen have the same car(s) going both ways on the same track.

Actually, I’ve always had excellent bus experiences at AofA and Pop. I check bus arrival times as I’m getting ready to leave my room so I know how quick I need to be if I want to catch a particular bus. Other then stop lights, bus traffic is generally a non issue.

Although one thing that slows the bus trips down is the unloading/loading of ECV’s. You may be more likely to get to Epcot faster by Gondola at these times.

Not sure what you’re looking for... Bus times are in the MDX app and mirror the displays at the bus stops.

Be it known that ETA's usually change before the bus arrives -- usually later, but occasionally earlier. And some buses will not appear on the app & the boards at all, usually either because the bus' GPS is malfunctioning, or it's an extra bus to help reduce long queues or fill the gap caused by a delayed bus.

You should be able to see it in the app the day you check into Pop. You can’t access it ahead of time, but it should definitely be there the morning you check in.

That would destroy sight lines, especially from Polynesian and the very expensive bungalows.

A funicular has two vehicles attached to opposite ends of a cable., almost always with the cable going around a pulley at "the top" so one car goes down while the other goes up. The vehicles counterbalance each other although not perfectly.

Non-aerial funiculars may have a single (shared) track that splits in the middle where the cars would pass each other. Double tracking does not increase the capacity.

The Caribbean Beach to Epcot gondola line could have been built as three separately powered loops end to end but if one loop had to shut down then the entire line still has to shut down.

A gondola line going straight across 7 Seas Lagoon (Magic Kingdom to Transportation & Ticket Center) would not prevent other gondola lines to nearby resorts. Individual lines to each resort does have an advantage over one big loop following the monorail loop since a shutdown of an individual loop does not shut down the whole system.

They would be wise to operate the Skyliner for a year to evaluate its mechanical performance and weather resilience before building more lines.

Yeah, Funiculars and cables driven trains in general have a lot of limitations that make them hard to use at WDW, especially for the monorail loop. If all of the stations were evenly spaced it could work pretty well, but since they aren't it'd have really low capacity or a lot of stopping away from stations.

Waiting for buses and having to collapse strollers for a bus are literally my two most hated things at Disney, both are fixed by the gondola.

Yea plus for us the gondola looks a lot more fun than a bus ride.

We want a bus to get there asap, but the gondola can take its sweet ole time, the gliding elevated views of the world.

Plus our group will likely mean we have our own gondola to ourselves.

For those that aren't readers of Josh's site, he is very sarcastic and that article is him giving a huge dig to all the worry worts on the various boards' Skyliner threads' top concerns and not his analysis. His analysis part was he's been riding gondolas for 30 years without issue and it is a tried and true transportation method.
