So I am trying to understand how this works.

I am booking a trip for Oct. I know it is a VERY busy time of year with food and wine and now the opening of Star Wars...but this is the only time my husband can take a last vacation before we move away and won't return for a while.

I asked if there was anything available for some dates in the rent dvc section and I got a return of basically nothing other than breaking up the reservation and all.

But when I look online with the disney site I can find at least something. Not my first choice with the price but something.....

why is it that disney has something but the dvc doesn't? I once read that DVC will give Disney so many rooms to sell but wasn't sure how true that was.

DVC and the Disney site are basically two sets of inventory. So when you asked owners what the availability was for October they were looking at rooms that were owned by the DVC owners. What Disney offers on their site is the cash resorts and the rooms they own at the DVC resort. For instance a DVC member can’t book rooms at the Grand Floridian they can only book at the Villas at the Grand Floridian, technically two separate properties. October is in the most popular DVC times and generally requires you to start looking into renting points 11-12 months before your travel date. The DVC resorts run around 100% occupancy and the cash resorts operate 70-95% probably so there is more availability.

I get the point only being able to book DVC but what I have highlighted is what I was not sure about. Like I said I thought it was the DVC handing over so much over to Disney.

Yeah Disney is just an owner of DVC, as I highlighted, so they reserve their ownership at the resort and rent it out. Just think of them like any other DVC owner who rents. They own minimum 2% of each resort. DVC doesn’t turn any over for free (aside from rooms DVC members don’t book prior to 60 days before check in though that doesn’t technically all go to Disney ).

I don’t follow your question. I don’t know what you mean by “handing over”.
Disney retains approximately 2% ownership of each DVC Resort. They use this inventory for maintenance or unexpected needs. In addition they rent this inventory directly. If a DVC Owner trades their points out for a cruise for example, those points are turned back to Disney to rent to pay DCL for the cruise. Finally, unrented DVC inventory, which is minimal, is given to CRO to rent at 60 days out.

someone answered it that Disney owns those. Like I said I wasn’t sure how it worked or what. But now I know.
