[ IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

After reading some of your previous posts, you may want to practice what you preach

I have to agree....the OP says this.....

Does it annoy the living daylights out of anyone else that any time you ask a simple question on this board there's the very distinct possibility of 1) someone making some off-the-cuff snotty comment 2) the conversation turning to an all out criticism of the original poster?

and quite often is the one making an off the cuff remark...(maybe it is in retort) (or so it seems in the black and white writings here on the DIS boards)

I have to admit that I make a remark here and there that could be considered a bit smart alecky. They are mostly in fun when people begin their questions with, "I know this is a stupid question, but"...then I usually agree with them. or if someone says that I want to know how to afford this restaurant or this ticket, I usually give them an answer that they do not wan to hear. or if someone wants feedback on their dining plans, I try to be honest with them, and if I think they stink, I will tell them. Mostly, it is tongue in cheek, and like a previous poster said, it is hard to tell that on a board like this.

If you read back through the entirety of those posts, you will see that it is just those types of people that I am commenting on in my "off-the-cuff" posts. Once again, people proving my point.

Or, you could interprete some responses as "ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer"................ :confused3

It's said that there is no such thing as a stupid question. That is very true. But there is such a thing as posting a question that has been asked and answered on seven similar threads in the past 24 hours becuase you are too lazy or stupid to use the search feature, or posting something that appears to be asked simply to get a rise out of people.

I think often people are jumped on due to the nature or delivery of their question or comment. A question like "Well I read the thread that says I can't refill my 7-11 Big Gulp cup at the All Stars food court for free, but can I do it at the Pop Food Court?"

I mean REALLY??? What on earth possesses a person to post something like this. That type of question deserves every snotty response that it gets.

Or the "My daughter is so precious and special that she just HAS to eat at Cinderella's and it's not fair that I live on the west coast and have to get up early to get the reservation." Get over it! your kid is no more special than anyone else's, and lots of people do what it takes without whining about it.

Anne

I think for the most part, this is by far the most civilized board on the Dis! =)

When people from all walks of life get together and communicate solely through text you're going to have disagreements and misunderstandings, plain and simple. It happens on every single internet board and it just comes with the territory. I think the restaurant board is fairly free of the excess rude comments. Remember that sarcasm and humor is hard to convey on a message board as well. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

In my experience, I find that sometimes sarcasm or humor dont "come across" well on the boards. When the words are in black and white, without inflection or body language, sometimes they don't translate as tongue-in-cheek or witty.
:guilty: .

Exactly what I was going to say. It's easy to misconstrue written words and perhaps get offended when the poster didn't mean it that way at all. Granted, there are some rude posts now and again (not usually on the restaurants forum) but it's because these forums are for stating opinions and we all have different ones. Some just word theirs a bit more strongly. It's just better to ignore the posts that bother you. I've been known to write a response to kind of get it out of my system and then I erase it and never post it because I know it will just add fuel to the fire. Maybe strange but it works for me :confused3

I get it.

If someone does not agree with what we are saying OR they con not give me EXACTLY the answer I wanted to hear.

They should not be allowed to post in my thread and should be scorned ;)

What is the purpose of a Discussion board if everyone agreed.
Take this thread Since some of us do not agree with the point OP was trying to make, Should we not be allowed to express our opinions?? I feel as long as we do not get personal, and express our opinion in an adult way it should not be considered rudeness.

That's not what I'm trying to say at all. Moreover, in my profession, we call what you just said converting someone's argument to a "straw man argument." At any rate, if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about, read the previous posts of "sugermouse." You'll get my point.

When I first found this board I had never been to a message board before. I really think that calling someone "to stupid to use the search feature" a bit harsh. Thank goodness someone nice came along and let me know it was there and how to use it. I wouldnt want to be seen as stupid and lazy

"argument"???? is that what you think this is?
"In my profession" we call it humor, lighten up. What my point was that whenever someone is proven wrong or disagreed with on the internet sometimes it is seen as an attack by the OP, instead of just a correction or differant opinion. Yes there are jerks everywhere, not just on the net.

As for "sugermouse" his posts here, do not seem snotty to me. But since you are the OP, I understand how you may.

I do get your point I just do not agree with it.

Even if you don't know the search feature exists, people should still look through a few pages of posts to see if the questions has been answered ad nauseum before posting their question--that's just common sense and courtesy.

And IMHO there are a few people on these boards who are stupid to the point that I don't know how they make it across the street in the morning. But that's another topic ;)

ROFL Anne! That totally made me spit coke on the screen. How true, how true.

On another board I post on, we've made this a motto "GOOGLE IS OUR FRIEND." People post things that could easily be learned if just googled! Like "what time does Home Depot close?" DUH - pick up the phone and call! ROFL

There are some posts on here like that - I just scream at the screen - "just pick up the phone and call Disney!!!"

But I try to be nice ;)

Gee, I think I get the point of the OP... already, within the 1st page and a half we have name calling, etc. Having a difference of opinion is one thing, but berating others because they may not be as learned in the art form of using the DIS is quite another.

One of the things that I like about the DIS boards in general is that people from all over the country and the world can come together and share their knowledge regarding a common topic of interest. :earboy2:

I find myself talking to (or sometimes just reading) people whom in the "real world" I might never have the chance to engage. The DIS is full of people from varying regions, political inclinations, religions, ethnicities, socio-economic background etc. :lovestruc

...And yet, we all come together and share our thoughts, knowledge, questions, stories etc. Mostly it is helpful, enlightening, and even funny. The information I have gathered here has been instrumental in much of my trip planning. I also enjoy passing along my own experiences.

Sure, I too have had my share of "snotty" comments, but far less than say my trip to the grocery store. :sad2: Bottom line...it hasn't tainted my impressions of my fellow DIS'ers.

-- I agree that the Restaurant board is one of the calmest forums on this site. The most controversial topic here is making a PS for 6 when you really only have 5. ;) (Now don't start on that here!!)

-- When you make a post, you invite comments pro and con. If you only want to hear from people who agree with you, say so in your post! I've seen that done and it is generally respected. Makes for a pretty dull thread though.

-- Some people are too sensitive, and some people are a little rude. Some rude people are born that way, some just like to argue, and some are really nice people who don't always bother to genuflect and beg for forgiveness before disagreeing with someone. And then there are those who get a kick from yanking other peoples chains.

-- You should participate in an unsupervised teen chat room for a few, then come back here. That will give you whole new perspective on DIS.
(For the record, I've never done that myself. But I can imagine...)

You're right, they should. I just took the lazy and stupid comment wrong :goodvibes

As a new poster, I find this to be sort of a mean comment. In my experience, there have been many times when the search function didn't work.

You mean you weren't raised, as we were, that there is no such thing as a stupid question? If you don't know the answer, then the question isn't stupid. Can't be. :)

Come on now. This 'There are no stupid questions' makes for a nice bumper sticker, but really??? One definition of stupid is: marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting. That does not mean that only dumb people can ask stupid questions. I have asked my share of stupid questions in my lifetime. I have asked how to get to some place while standing directly under a sign telling me how to get there. It was a stupid question. 'What time is the 3 o'clock parade?' is a stupid question. (I didn't ask that one.) Everyone has asked stupid questions. And I don't think that gives people the license to be mean to someone for it. This country has gone so PC it's stupid.
