Disney Remaking "Flight of the Navigator"

Disney is getting ready to remake the 1986 sci-fi adventure movie "Flight of the Navigator" with Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs) coming on board to write the screenplay.

The original movie told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family.

The movie grossed only $17 million when it was released but was later rediscovered on VHS, becoming a cult hit. John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, steps into the same role for the new version.

I am a little skeptical of Disney remaking Disney.....I liked the movies the way they were...hey, if the Disney Channel was actually like the old Disney Channel, kids today might be familiar with the live action classics like Flight of the Navigator and Witch Mountain, and Love Bug, and we wouldn't have all of these remakes. That's how I got to know those films...and they were brilliant.

I was 7 or 8 years old when the original came out so it was quite cool at the time. Not sure I like all the remakes either. Are they going to swap out the Beach Boys songs for Hannah Montana now?

I liked the original Flight movie.
Should also add that in all my years of watching movies, it is extremely rare for a remake (or even a sequel) to be as good as the original movie.

I know! I love the Turner Classic Movie Channel. It's back to back classics all day, all the time. With Disney's extensive film and television library, I do not understand why they wouldn't do the same. There is definitely a market there for it to succeed

I love the original version and aren't there any rides left in the various parks that they can turn into a movie???!!!??? Why ruin another thing from my childhood!

I keep hoping they will bring back Vault Disney. They have three channels they could put it on - why not ABC family after Midnight?

I really like Flight of the Navigator and my kids love it, too. I can't see how they can make it any better.

My favorite movie as kid was FOTN (yep just made up a new abreviation), Thus the max (left off an x) part of my name.

Part of it was filmed on what used to be Bert Reynolds Ranch in the town I'm from. The gas station secene - that was (don't know if it's still there) on BR's property. And there is or WAS one of the spaceships (just the outside shell/prop) on his property too. I remember going to the ranch as a kid for a feild trip and seeing it there. Wonder if they'll redo the same places. Maybe I can be an extra.

I actually already heard this rumor..... thankfully swiftly disproven and just a rumor. FOTN was one of my all time favorites too, i'd be interested to see what they could do with the movie "magic" we have now..... but still probably not as good as the original!

I keep hoping for the return of "Vault Disney" but with the transformation of ToonDisney now into DisneyXD, we've lost all of the classic cartoons from when I (we) were gorwing up, Im not gonna get my hopes up for the return of the vault.

I am hoping this was a joke that I read but here it goes...

I read that the middle Jonas Bro (sorry not a fan or anything ) will be cast in the main role while older bro and younger bro will be the younger brother (past and present).

I'm so hoping this is a joke but then its Disney and they will do anything to market them, Miley, Zac, etc.

A quick look shows absolutely nothing since the original announcement. Note that this means nothing - it isn't unusual for directors/writers/producers to take a while in the initial development process as they interleave work with more current projects. It does mean that it's not on a fast track for development though, and could eventually end up in the bit bucket.

My wife forced me to go on the backlot tour with her a few weeks ago at DHS. It was 97 degrees out, and it felt like a tour of the face of the sun. The only thing that I enjoyed about it was the FOTN (mad props to SpectroMax for that!) spaceship.

Loved FOTN as a kid. Can't see how it can be better. I'll make my kids watch the original before the new one comes out.
