I read on a blog post a few months ago that they are changing the refillable disney cups to have a chip in them. Meaning you have to prepay for the drink and the soda machines will know when you don't have money on the chip and will not dispense soda... Is this true? We were planning on getting the cups for fun as well as drinks in the evening at our resort.

Thanks for any feedback
Jenny

I'm not sure? I would think the chip is to prevent people from dispensing from the parks and other hotels. I am under the impression that the mug is only for the resort you are staying in.

This is true. You buy a certain number of days and only then it will allow refills and only at your resort.

You can use the new mugs at any resort, not just your own (which is different than the previous system).

OP, the new mugs are simple to use. You just purchase the length of stay that you need and when you fill it, you just have to sit it on a little stand located under each dispenser and fill it by pushing the button on the drink of choice. This only applies to the soda machines. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are not using the new system, so you just fill those the same as always.

Our travel agent said something along the lines that you had to wait a certain about of time between refills...maybe that's what the microchip is for?

It's around two minutes. No biggie. The new system prevents people from bringing mugs from past trips and essentially stealing soda. The old system was being severely abused, so this was their solution to their problem, and I think it was long overdue. New system works great, and is simple to use. Also, the paper cups have a chip on them, too. If you buy a single serve paper cup, you can get a max of 4 total fills over a period of an hour or maybe 90 minutes. Once the cup expires, the machine will not dispense any more soda.

This makes total sense to me. I feel this is all long overdue.

Quick Question

I have given up drinking soda and as such was wondering if the water dispenser on the soda dispenser would still be "free"?

I would prefer not to buy a mug just for water if possible, but would if I have to?

What say you all?

TIA

Water remains free and accessible on the machines without needing a chipped cup/mug. :thumbsup2
