"Best Friends Pet Care opening slightly delayed to September 1 2010, with existing kennels to begin closing that day
Aug 17, 2010

Best Friends Pet Care, the new luxury pet care facility at the Walt Disney World Resort, is now planned to open its doors Wednesday, September 1 2010.

The existing kennels located throughout the Walt Disney World Resort will begin to close as follows:
Kennels at Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios close to walk-ups September 1.
Kennels at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground and Magic Kingdom (Transportation and Ticket Center) close to walk-ups September 2.
From September 1 on, Guests’ pets with new reservations for Best Friends Pet Care will be hosted at the new facility. Any pets already boarding at the other kennels prior to September 1 will be either transferred over to the new facility or finish out their stay at their original location; determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with their owners.

Best Friends Pet Care is located across from Disney's Port Orleans Resort at 2510 Bonnet Creek Parkway, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830. Guests who wish to book accommodations for their pets can visit www.wdw.bestfriendspetcare.com or call 877/4-WDW-PETS."

Disney Co. doesn't own Best Friends Pet Center. Disney has done some things I disagree with but how is this Disney's fault? Plus, construction delays happen all the time and with the current economy it's almost expected.

I also understand that Best Friends advertises "suites" but honestly, they are still cages.

I don't know where you live, but we have several very nice kennels here like the Disney ones will be...with nice rooms with heated floors, and raised beds, not cages. They let us bring her bed and blankie and some toys. Maybe you can find one close to you? They often go under the name "Pet Resort" rather than "kennel" and they have wonderful facilities...ours welcomes you to come and look it over before you leave your dog or cat there. These facilities have daycare and one-on-one cuddle time if that's what your dog needs. Ours even has a webcam so we can check on her, and every time she's been on camera she has been having a ball playing with the other dogs or being cuddled by an attendant.

We have a papillon that is used to being with us 24 hours a day and they are absolutely wonderful with her. She gets boarded because she can't wait for my son to get home from work to take her out, she is a small dog and goes out several times during the day after they have gone to work, so we can't leave her here, and I don't want her alone anyway. She needs companionship. I pay extra for the doggie daycare so she gets to be outside more than the 4 times a day they take them out for potty and run with the other dogs and get some exercise and I have watched them on the webcam cuddling her. And they don't mind if nervous mommie me calls them to see how she is doing (although she is over a year old now and has stayed several times so I am not so nervous anymore! I know she is in good hands!)

This has been a really great thing for her...and I think your dog would be OK at a place like that...I am sure they'd let you bring him in to "see" the place and meet the caregivers before you leave him...they know how important our furbabies are to us!

Good luck!

I also understand that Best Friends advertises "suites" but honestly, they are still cages.

They are much larger than cages, the small ones are 4X6 rooms with raised beds and glass fronts so the dogs can see out...much nicer than the old kennels used to be with real cages. You can get bigger rooms for bigger dogs but our dog is very small so the small room is OK.

Nobody needs to bring their pet on vacation. Get a kennel at home and enjoy your trip.

I notice by your signature that you have kids. Do you take them to Disney? Well, to some people, their pets ARE their kids and they want to see them every day and sometimes more than that. I am the proud mommy to my cats and dog and grandmom to 3 grandkitties & 2 grandpuppies. I wish I could take my dog to WDW with me but she doesn't do well in the car. Our kids take turns coming to the house a couple times a day while we're gone. We do the same for them when they go away. If DD goes with us again, she will probably take her tiny Alaskan Eskimo puppy with her because it would be to much for DS to try to get to both houses 2-3 times a day to check on our dogs plus take care of his own. Her puppy does much better in the car.

OMG!! I am so very excited about this!!! Our 10 year old husky passed away last year of cancer. Just this past weekend we got a new puppy!! He's a super cute 4 month old Maltese named Huey. Anyway....we are heading to WDW in December and just might take the little baby along!! Thanks posting this!!

Not next year! We have a special trip that is just DH and I.

Or you could be as crazy as we are and buy a camper just so that you can bring the "kids" on vacation WITH you. In my signature you'll see them all wearing their WDW buttons from last year's trip. :upsidedow

Our gang is headed back to the Fort in November where we will ALL have a wonderful time.

To each his own. If there wasn't a call for yet another "luxury kennel" you can bet Best Friends wouldn't be sinking a fortune into this one.

As you can see from my posts, my pup looks a lot like 2 of yours. She is miniature Border Collie/Black Lab mix. Looks like the Border Collie but is the size of a lab. She only likes our family & DS GF & DD DH. Don't think she would do good in a kennel. When we took her for surgery, when I went to pick her up, she wouldn't let anyone near here and I had to go to the back myself to get her to go home.

Thanks so much for posting this link. I just made reservations for our Husky at our local kennel, but I'd love to bring her along to WDW someday ... I don't think she could take the car ride down, though.

She's a beauty!

Of our 3, one is pretty much bombproof, but 2 of them definitely wouldn't do well in a kennel. So...... we bought them a camper complete with their own "wing" so we can all go on vacation together. ;)

We stay at the Fort each year and they love going to the dog park and riding on the golf cart. They're comfy and safe in the camper while we're out at the parks, and they love to hang out at the campsite with us.

Camping/traveling isn't for everyone or every dog, but in our case it's definitely a win - win - ...win. :goodvibes

Given that they are already a year late, a couple more weeks is nothing.

And as mentioned, this has nothing to do with Disney pushing it back. It is a separate company building on Disney property. They have been operating the existing kennels at the parks in the meantime.

i understand the kennel is not "disney's" but i'm set in my ways of considering everything on disney's property...DISNEY. sorry if that annoys anyone.

we had the kennels booked for our stay from aug 26-sept 2 but now with the change they will only be there on the 1st to 2nd. a bit annoying considering we have to rebook at the other kennels and lets just say the lady we talked to over @ epcot wasn't too friendly nor did she seem to care that we had a reservation and were told by the kennel that we would be given top priority when making a new reservation. :confused3

Don't know what we are going to do if she's still with us when we move to Florida when we retire (she's 13 now and we have a few years to go till then.) I guess we would have to make a lot of stop-overs in order to get her there without too much trauma.
