If I use one of the power cells that Disney sells in the vending machines, can I still use it when I get home? Will I still be able to charge it and use it?

Yep! I actually bring mine to work with me some days. And actually at night in Disney I charged it in the room if I forgot to swap it out.

If you are referring to the Fuel Rods, I have one. Yes, you can recharge the battery yourself. You can also swap it out at any Fuel Rod kiosk.

If I remember correctly- it really depended. Sometimes the battery drained quickly and other times it lasted awhile.

If you have a recent smart phone with a big battery, the fuel rod will get you from about 35% or so up to full one time. This was our experience with several Samsung Galaxy S7's as well as a Note 4. The Fuel Rod has a relatively low capacity. It is good for use in the parks since you can easily swap it for a fresh one, but has much more limited usefulness outside of the parks.

If you're coming in from DCA there is a fuel rod kiosk in the airport that's cheaper than Disney's. I had no issue trading it in at the Disney kiosk.

OK - once again I learn something relatively random from the boards.

I'm considering buying a portable battery for my phone (Samsung); the best overall deal (price and highly reviewed) I see on Amazon is one fpr $30.

Unless the price went up, the fuel rods you are referring to are $30 also.

Pros and cons of buying the one on Amazon vs Disney? I guess the Disney wins on convenience at the parks, the one on Amazon wins on overall usefulness.

That is, if my Amazon bought one runs out, I'm out. But it will last longer.

If my Disney one runs out (and it likely will because it appears it drains faster) I can swap for another.

So...I think the one from Amazon wins. Thoughts?

Can you get more than one cell phone charge out of one before you have to recharge it?

Depends on the phone you have. If you have say an iPhone 5 you might be able to get a full charge and a little more out of it. If you have an iPhone 8+ you might only get your phone up to about 80% from 0%.

Their usually only good for about 1 charge for a phone then you'll have to swap it out or recharge it. Their only about 2200 mah

So tell me about the fuel rods? You buy one and then if you need to swap it out, you can? What is the charge for initial fuel rod and then is there a charge for swapping it out?

Fuel Rods are $30 at a Disney kiosk, and typically $20 at locations outside of Disney. Once purchased, you get unlimited FREE swaps at any Fuel Rod kiosk.

NOTE: Disney's contract with Fuel Rod prevents Fuel Rod from listing the Disney kiosks on their website. Disney locations can be found using the MDE mobile app.

Initial setup is about $30 and the swap outs are free at the kiosk.

$30 in the parks gets you the rod and cables necessary (different pins depending on your phone) it is all yours to keep, you use the rod go to a kiosk swap it for a fully charged one, unlimited swaps no extra payment. There are kiosks at all 4 theme parks, Disney springs and all resorts except Caribbean beach ( I'm assuming once construction end they will have it) they also have kiosks at Sea world and Discovery cove, not Universal

That’s really cool! Since we all have iPhones, I’m assuming we could all use the initial rod and the refillable ones?

$30 seems high to me. If you buy ahead, I would look around more.

Yes, that is a general consensus. You are paying for in-park convenience with a fuel rod.

The Amazon one would require re-charging at night (some people forget), and depending on which one, may be larger/bulkier to carry (I’m guessing a $30 one is quite large)
