Disney Pins

During our last trip, my DD8 and DS5 both started pin trading. I ordered 25 pins on EBay for $15. During our trip in June, they loved trading, but we only came home with about 18 pins. We lost 7, most likely from falling off. Any suggestions on how to not lose these pins? Thanks!

I don't know how they work but I know they sell some special locking pin backs.. not sure if they are on for good or not once you put them on though.

They also sell a book style case for pins instead of a lanyard so then at least if the DO fall off they are in the book. Problem with this though is then you have to carry it around instead of wearing it. You could probably create your own with a binder or good 'ol trapper keeper which would be cheaper but again - have to be carried, not to mention bulkier than the specially made ones from Disney.

I personally don't like to wear a lanyard since it rubs on my neck but I keep mine in the front pocket of my bag so it is easy to find when I desire to trade and if they fall off - it is in my bag.

Hope one of these work for you - and maybe someone else can elaborate more on the use of the special pin backs.

The locking pin backs are put on with a little allen wrench. They aren't permanent, but they aren't convenient if you want to be able to trade pins. We use the locking backs for pins that my kids get and know they want to keep (especially expensive pins!). For trading, you can buy these from Amazon:

We always make sure to trade just the pin, not the back. These backs are more secure than those lame black rubber backs, but still easy to put on/take off for trading.

Thanks! I had always wondered how they worked - as I sad - I don't wear mine so I don't "need" to know.

I collect pins but they are on a board at home - resorts we stayed at, each park, DD's first ride from her first trip (pooh) her first "rollercoaster" (barnstormer), the new fantasyland pin from our passholder preview, F&G, F&W, etc... can't imagine carrying them all around lol

I take a small zip lock bag and either put in my bag or pocket. I only keep like 4 or 5 on my lanyard.

My kids each wear one lanyard of some they want to keep but show off and some they want to trade. The rest are on spare lanyards at home in their rooms. A friend posted a pic of his pin board and now I want to help my kids do that instead of all these extra lanyards. Just gotta get around to actually doing it. Maybe this summer before school starts again!

I went out and bought earring backs for my Air Force JROTC uniform for school for rank, nametag, etc. They are a snug fit and work great for disney pins. not to mention they are cheap. you can get about 50 of them for around 2 bucks.

I got a bunch of non locking metal backings on ebay for pretty cheap. They stay on and there convenient to trade with, I just ask cast members if its alright if I keep my own backing. Never had one fall off this way.

If you have a Claire's near you I bet they have them.

We just use those cheap metal backings from Michaels Arts and Craft, they are about $1 for 12 backs and we have never lost a pin. You don't really need more than 12 backs anyway because you just rotate the pins on the lanyard with the same backings.

The first year my kids traded pins they wore lanyards. They hated wearing them and we ended up carrying them the whole time. We did use the locking backs after a favorite pin got lost, but some of the CM's got impatient when were removing the locking backs. Since then, the kids wear a Disney fanny pack with multiple pockets. One pocket holds their camera and phone (large length-wise pocket that zips), another holds a Vinylmation to trade (velcro pocket), and one pocket holds the pins they have chosen to trade (pouch-like zipper pocket). They each pick 5 or so pins to trade for the day and go through them each night. It has worked great without losing any.

Back in 2003, I got (temporarily) hooked with pin trading. I would find some unique ones on castmembers that I'd trade for and it was fun. Flash forward to 2013. I saw the same unwanted pins over and over. Not much of a selection anymore.
