Disney Pins -- to check or carry on?

I've always carried my kids Disney pins in my carry on backpack for flights before and after the cruise. It's the one item that they would be so sad to lose so I always felt better carrying them on my person. Last cruise, was stopped in security before the flight home for "metallics" and I was pulled aside, backpack checked thoroughly etc. So now I'm second guessing if I should pack them in my checked luggage or carry on as usual. Wouldn't want to be detained longer next time, or there to be any problem getting to my cruise. But it makes me grateful that TSA is so thorough. What do you all do -- check them or carry on?

I check mine.

Compromise if it is easy. Have a lanyard for each that you carry and allow the others to be checked. This way it won't be a total loss if they get delayed.

That is a good tip, maybe I'll carry on the ones that are rounder in shape and check a few in each bag so at least they'll have something to trade even if one of the bags gets lost/delayed.

I never even thought about pins. Do you take them on your cruise with you or are you just taking them to the World?

Leave the special ones that you're not trading for sure at home. Check the rest.

Pins go in my carry-on. Sometimes the CMs who work at the MCO Disney stores have good trading pins.

We take them on the cruise to trade at officer's pin trading, for sure we will leave the special ones at home. We do have some very nice traders, though, as I refuse to buy scrappers/fakes and I would just hate for them to be confiscated or lost!

My experience is that I randomly get stopped by TSA at least 60% of the time that I fly anyway, so I wouldn't assume that checking the pins would save me any hassle at security. Couple that with the disappointment I would feel if the pins went missing from my checked luggage and my conclusion is that I would carry the pins on if they were mine.

I was pulled in January because of the pins in my carry on. Funny I had them in it heading there and coming back, but only got stopped on the way back. Don't think it will change me from still packing them in my carry on. However, I will now allow a little more time for security. When the officer asked if I had anything with sharp points - I said no. I completely didn't think about the pins.

I was told to take out the pin case at the check point and it would not be a problem.

Years ago on the DVC board, a father told of his son losing all of his Disney pins in checked luggage.

I have too much money invested in pins to risk putting in checked baggage. That said, I've always put in carry on and never had a problem with TSA detention. (my luck I will next month now)

We always carry our pins. 1) as someone said...way too much money invested. I never trust high value items to checked luggage. And 2) depending on how many you take - think about how much they weigh. Between the two of us, we can trade over 200 pins in a 10 day period. That can add up.

With 3 - 4 trips per year, our carry on with the pins gets pulled about 10% of the time, but we just roll with the flow.

I would never trust having my pins in a checked bag. I would take them out and put them in their own inspection tray, the same way you do for a laptop.

My son just brought his for our cruise. In his carry on. Bag was search on way to cruise, not on way back. Who knows if it was random, due to the pins or the GoPro being in the bag. Not a problem. I would not check anything you are not comfortable losing and is valuable.
