Winter Olympics No Video Thread

I watched the second run of the men’s slalom live. They had about 7 or 8 low seeded athletes from countries that never medal, never even come close to the top 10. It was refreshing to watch them.

Iceland
Haiti
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Israel
Chile
And a few others.

The first run had athletes that didn’t make the cut to the second round:

India
Singapore
Iran
Guinea-Bissau
Etc.

The final athlete, the favorite to win gold from Norway, messed up and had a hissy fit. He threw his ski poles, took off his skis, then climbed under the netting fence and stomped off to the margins.

He was probably considered hiking back to Norway.

"Quad God" has been invited to participate in Olympic Skating Gala next Saturday. He is also planning to compete in the world championships next month.

They probably begged him to show...half the folks who probably bought tickets for that gala did it just for him. Funny enough, inviting him is WILDLY unprecedented. They only invite the medalists and sometimes the 4th place person, if they were like Ilia - expected to medal - or the home country rep. But his worldwide popularity is that high.

Usually they skate in order of finish (all bronze folks, then all silver folks, etc), so I'm guessing they'll have to have Ilia lead off the show.

Malinin did medal in the team competition -- he was responsible for the U.S. getting gold.

I watched some of that - I agree, it was nice to see the lower ranked skiers do their second runs. The announcers were mentioning that they were multiple seconds off of the leader's times, but I couldn't help thinking they're hurtling themselves down this mountain without killing themselves - that in itself was impressive enough for me. Aside from falling on my face, I wouldn't have a clue what gates I would need to go around (and on what side of it). :p

Generally, the daytime coverages I have watched seem to do a better job of showing the actual competition. At night, the primetime show is mostly a recap of the highlights. Clearly, they can't show everything and with the time difference presents a challenge in what to show. However, I find if you actually want to watch a number of events live, the daytime shows seem to be a better choice.

But "Primetime" (8p-11p ET) would 2a-5a in Italy. They CAN'T show actual live competition because there's nothing going on. Primetime for PT would be 5a-8a in Italy.

So yea, if you want to watch anything "live", daytime (in the US) would generally be the only way to do so.

Primetime is used largely as opportunities to re-air specific things and parts of things from earlier in the day. It is good for those unable to watch events during the day. This is the case even with there being no time difference. There may be certain live events mixed in depending on the time change of any given Olympics. For winter Olympics figure skating is a standard for primetime coverage

I do feel like the primetime coverage is shorter than in the past. I think in the past primetime coverage was 7 to 11:30 or midnight. Maybe I'm wrong

Thats what I remember too. Maybe NBC decided it wasn't worth it?

They're also showing coverage on Peacock. Sometimes both stations carry the same events.
Well broadcast NBC probably has more available viewers. Isn't Peacock a subscription?

Broadcast only has NBC, CNBC, and USA Network showing coverage, doesn't Peacock have all competition?

Peacock has every event live (often it's a world feed, so you probably won't recognize the commentators), and then they have replays available any time you want. I've been getting my money out of my subscription this week!

As for the primetime window, I think the winter game are always shorter because there are fewer events to showcase.

I like the mixed relay events

The luge one was great. We watched all the luge and skeleton events. Started bobsled.

Mixed relay short track is fun too but I think this year the luge took over for how much we liked it.

Duel moguls is intense and fun.
