Just got off the phone with Canon after getting a product return authorization...

Disgusted; or more accurately, disappointed. Images are not that much better, and video is crap: auto-focus can't 'settle' so no matter the situation, even holding steady on a fixed object, it goes in and out of focus. More so in even slightly low light.

And it turns out the buttons are in fact poorly placed, (or my hands are too big,) each being just a bit off of where you expect it to be, especially the shutter release- or just in the place where you can hit it without knowing it and throw settings off. Various other petty little things, but with the anti-functionality of the auto focus, all else is moot.

One thing about the camera, the test shots I had taken the night before- the mode dial was set to <C> (???) not <auto> as I had thought, so that helped. The still images are good, and better than anything I have had, especially in dynamic range, but again, not that much better, and with the bad auto focus in video mode, not a keeper.

Oh! And the door to the battery compartment is fit so tightly that it is hard to open when there are batteries in it. I mean it takes some real force- much more than one would expect or want to use- so much so that I thought I must have jammed it, so I inspected it carefully, but it was aligned perfectly.

Today's POTD was straight out of the camera (a bit overcast at the time) and yesterday's was subjected to some modifications before posting.

Just FYI.

Sorry to hear that the Canon didn't work out for you :sad2:

 Have you thought about a Nikon?

I love mine... even though I use it mostly on automatic... hoping to sign up for lessons to help master all the settings.

Just a thought........

Well, I am back to 'shopping' and Nikon is on the list- which one you have? After prepping for calling the return line, found some very disturbing stuff about most of the Canon line, so they are pretty much out of the picture now. Though my A 1000 remains a pretty good little pocket camera.

As for lessons- read the manual! (And that's coming from a man!!!)

I have the basic DSLR entry level D40 :thumbsup2

I have tried to read the manual and it still isn't clicking :confused3

I think for myself I would learn if I had hands on instruction ;)

I have also bought a couple of instruction books specifically for the D40, but it is hard to absorb the info when there are others around ;)

B-T-W...I have a Canon point and shoot which I am happy using on days when I don't want to carry the big camera :goodvibes

If I was shopping at this time, I would still buy a Nikon, but get the DLSR that guides you along with the settings.

Some of the pictures posted on this thread are awesome, and many are from Nikon camera's.... also If you ever stop and look at the photopass people in Disney, they are all using Nikon :goodvibes

Ya- I just Amazon'd Dave's D80... 1900 bucks??? LOL!!!

What I want is my Oly C-740, but with less shutter lag and sharper images... doesn't seem too much to ask... that is a GREAT little camera!

:)
