so this morning we got to animal kingdom and saw that the entire lot nearest the entrance was empty (peacock I believe), while they were making everyone park on the left and back lot. Is this normal?
Also what's with the "preferred parking" for $35 I see this yet at all the parks?
I just feel like it's Disney greed.

They have announced upgrades to the bus terminals at AK which involved changes in lots for guests for a time. If you don't want to pay for Preferred parking, you don't have to. I certainly don't anymore than I pay for valet, but that is my preference, there are many who find a value in it.

The empty was probably the prefered parking

it is the closest parking to the parks
The 100 coned off spits were the preferred. The attendant said the other lot was for the afternoon parking when they knew no one would pay for the preferred spots.

I also believe what you saw was the preferred parking section of the lot. Maybe if they find it sits empty most of the day they will stop doing this but for now we have a longer walk or take the tram. For us it's not that big a deal, to many other things to worry about!

As a PP stated, some of it is preferred parking. then they have to leave a gap so that people aren't parking right next to the preferred parking, because then it wouldn't be so preferred that early in the morning. Why pay extra to park one row closer, KWIM?

Also, not sure if this is true but I thought Disney did parking in a certain way and if you didn't remember where you parked upon exiting and couldn't find your car, you could tell security about what time you parked and they could take you to that area to find your car.

The preferred parking is what others have said - closer parking if you want to shell out $35. For me, not worth it. That's why those trams go around and why I'm not in a hurry at Disney World. It's my vacation and I spend what I want to spend and if others want to spend more, they can. As for "Disney greed"? Lookk at any other business and see the same thing. Why is it that only Disney is being accused of being greedy? If they were greedy, FastPasses would cost. Disney is a business.

Disney was the last of the parks in the area to do Preferred Parking and I would honestly bet that by the 50th if not sooner FP+ will be a paid add on or at least paid for anything beyond the first 3

The good thing about parking at any park aside from MK, is no matter where you park, even if it's in the very back corner, it's not too bad of a walk. MK is the only park we'll wait a few minutes for the tram if we're in the very back. Any other park we can easily beat the tram if it's not there waiting when we park

they need something for the tram drivers to do. So they use the further lots out until it gets busy and CMs start going on breaks. Mid morning when it starts getting real busy, they can use the closer lots and not overwhelm the CMs and trams.

Plus with the preferred parking now, they need to make it seem like a value. If everyone else was parking 10 rows away, nobody would pay.

Welcome to preferred parking. We experienced the beginnings of preferred parking at the MK. It delayed our arrival to MK rope drop to take the tram to the TTC rather than just a short walk. Not a fan of preferred parking but as others have noted, everyone is doing it. Though last time were early at Sea World there wasn't much difference between preferred and "normal" parking.
