Disney On Ice - I need to vent!

Our arena doesn't allow outside food and drinks and they do search bags. There are two types of concessions at these events - those sold by Disney and those sold by the arena. It's the same way when we go there for the circus. The arena concessions are expensive enough, but the Disney/circus stuff is just outrageous! If we buy anything, it's from the arena concessions. Each boy can get a popcorn or pretzel and a drink. That's how we've always done it and that's what they expect.

My DD10's grandparents treat the both of us to Disney on Ice right after Christmas. We've gone the last 3 years now. The show is beautiful, the costumes gorgeous, the food and souvenir prices are outrageous!

My DD knows better than to ask for anything. First year I bought a smallish box of popcorn with a Mickey ears crown for like $10-12. One of the ears broke off before we got home. Next year I didn't buy anything.

This year, I bought a box of popcorn $10 and a bottle of water for Grandma $3-4, I think) We either eat before, or after.

The grandparents buy some of the more expensive seats (my Christmas present)but honestly, I would be happy with some further up. First year we sat in one of the rows on the ice-Brrrrr! it was cold! After that we've moved up a few rows. A little warmer.

We've seen Nemo, Princesses, and the current one, World of Fantasy. I liked Nemo the best. World of Fantasy first half was good. Second half-too much Tink for me, but DD10 loved it.:confused3

Next year I'll check to see if we can bring our own snacks in. This year the family in front of us was constantly buying things. I bet the spent $50-75 on each child (they had 2) and they weren't the only ones. When I see that kind of consumer spending I have hope about the economy!

Small snacks (little bags of potato chips/popcorn/candy bars/fruit even sandwiches) and drink boxes/bottles can easily fit in the pockets of most jackets or the front pouches of sweatshirts. I don't think anyone is stooping to patting people down yet. And before someone tells me it's in bad form to break the rules...................too bad! It's in bad form to take advantage of your patrons too;)

I didn't check our venue's site rules before we went and had two boxes of candy in my purse. The women checking bags told me she would have to throw them way. I said I don't think so my husband will take them back to the car, we had found a parking space fairly close. Anyways, those boxes fit in my husband's coat pocket.

Bad, rule breaker, whatever..... it seems that everyone around me was eating stuff brought from home.

We went last week, I was shocked at how much everything cost! My sons had on new Toy Story shirts I'd gotten them on clearance and I brought Skittles in with us (coat pockets), I was certainly glad! I'd warned the boys if they wanted anything, they'd have to use their allowance. They said (a little too loudly) those prices were crazy, Disneyworld was much cheaper, they were just going to wait until we go back!

There is no way in H...L I would be buying a straw. I think that warrents a letter to the powers that be.

Yeah, We thought Disney World was spendy until we went to a local Disney show- it wasn't the Disney on ice, but the Playhouse dsney live one- it's HORRIBLE that we bought 2 cotton candies and 2 lemonades and it came to $45! That's absolutely INSANE!!!!! If Disney does 'sell the rights' to these traveling shows it's actually doing itself a dis-service, because if I were disney, i wouldn't want to be affiliated with crap like that! Those horrible prices are a disgrace to what Disney stands for!

We just take the light up spinning thing from home that we bought on clearance at the Disney store. We eat just before the show somewhere offsite, although Rupp arena has a food court area in the same complex with reasonable prices. We even buy the tickets in person to avoid the $10.80 PER TICKET ripoff Ticketmaster fee.

Including parking, it costs about $50-60 for the 3 of us to go.

Um, instead of being upset with the prices and STILL paying them-try having a plan in ADVANCE. Maybe have a snack/treat before you go or plan a nice dinner/treat after the show. Or just simply say "no". You could even explain that it is costly to attend the show and THAT is the treat. Kids can understand more than given credit for.

My kids have no interest in the spinny light up toys but they also know we are not buying them. I do allow them to pick one food thing out. We are allowed to bring food in with us but we usually eat before/after.

This past show in February we had my niece's half brother and sister with us which was their first show. My sister picked up glowsticks from dollar tree with stars on top and those kids didn't ask for any other toy. My dd9 picked the $15 tinkerbell snowcone. She was with my sister who didn't know any better and bought the $2.00 Stitch spoon. We don't have a $1 option but plastic spoons are free. Fortunately mj dd5 picked a $4.50 box of popcorn from a regular vendor. My girls do use the cups at home but dd5 knew we have others at home. My niece's brother 8 got a snowcone so he had a souveneir. I felt bad for my niece's sister 7 who had popcorn but no souveneir and I bought her a $8 Minnie Mouse pen. My niece 21 ended up not being able to go to the show so my 14 year old nephew came. He bought ice cream for $7.50 with his own money.

We also went to a show in December when we won 4 free tickets. Dh doesn't have much interest so I took a friend of dd's. I know this girl comes from a very poor family and really appreciated the show. I allowed her to pick out one food and she picked an Ariel snowcone. The poor girl dropped her snowcone when we sat done. I felt so bad for her and was willing to pay for another one. I went back to the same vendor with the cup and he refilled the cup for free. Then at the end of the show dd's friend dropped her cup and it went under the bleachers. Security told her to go tell the vendor. She did and the vendor handed her a new clean empty cup for free.

Its insane what things cost. But I know Dd loves to go, so I treat her to McDonalds first on the way to the arena. Poor deprived child only gets McDonalds on the way to the airport or the arena. The few place I know that its cheaper to get the happy meal on the way than to eat there, lol!

Why is it that adults and/or children can't sit through a show or a movie without having something to "eat" and/or "drink" - and especially in places where the prices go waaaay beyond "highway robbery".. Most shows or movies only last a few hours.. :confused3

When DD, her DH, and my DGD attend shows such as this, they normally either eat just before heading out to the show - or make plans to eat a late dinner "out" after the show - at a reasonable price..

There's no way I would pay those prices.. No way..

That was nice of them to do that. Maybe they do have a heart afterall, even if it's hidden behind those prices. I'm glad they made the girls happy.

I agree. Most shows/movies don't last that long. We either eat right before we go or plan to eat right after it's finished.

You can save a ton of $$$ buy buying the kids ice cream cones at McDonalds after the show instead of a $15 snowcone each during the show. You could likely have a whole meal at an inexpensive local restaurant or fast food place for the price of snacks at a movie theatre or show.
