"Disney announced today from NYC that they are entering the personal computer market. With a childish design, built in content control and other kid-friendly features, it could be a breakthrough or just another specialized device flop. Do children really need their own specialized computer?" johnpaul191 points out that frogdesign designed the box, and writes "It looks sort of like a squared-off eMac (but blue), and has a flat mouse-shaped front (the ears are speakers!). It uses a a pen for on-screen input, as well as a keyboard and mouse."

I saw it briefly on CNN and it looks cute. It might well be overpriced, though - -Mickey doesn't sell things cheap!

Figure after they dumped $100+ mil into M:S they may get a little ticked off if Disney didn't use some of their hardware.

a german manufacturer of Computer hardware , TV .... producing for large discount supermarkets in europe on order .. so they are going the cheap way producing it, but Medion is well known for their good quality and customer service here in germany !

Trouble.

There is more than enough competition in this field by those who know what they are doing.

Wouldn't you rather have a D***

Isn't it like $900 bucks...or did I misread that?

Yikes, I will keep my De**

Exactly. Computer manufacturing is a cutthroat business, and volume sales are critical. This doesn't make sense to me either, but then they didn't ask what I thought.

Actually, it sounds like Disney's only investment in this venture is their brand. They appear to be licensing their brand to the OEM who will build the machines and provide the distribution and support. Disney is one of the worlds most recognizable brands. It's a license to print money. They might as well squeeze as much value out of it as they can.

This may not be a bad business for them. My boys have been using computers since they were very young. I might have been willing to pay a few more $$ to get a PC with mouse ears.
