One of the factors that is going into our decision to buy or not to buy into DVC is the cost of staying at Deluxe properties out-of-pocket. We have been lucky to be able to afford to go to Disney 5 or 6 times in the past three years on various discount programs -- buy 4, get 3 (twice), 35% off rooms, etc. We have also been getting the PIN offers (we apparently have been identified as suckers for those by Big Brother -- "We can't afford not to go!").

We very much like staying on the monorail (GF & Poly in particular) So, buying into the DVC hasn't been as attractive with all these discounts floating around out there. Assuming the economy picks back up in the next couple of years, I would expect a release of huge pent-up demand for Disney vacations, and those discounts will likely dry up.

In the future, we would expect to travel to Disney during F&W (wife and I for sure, perhaps with kids) perhaps annually, perhaps every other year, and take a week long vacation at the end of May/beginning of June before the peak peak season kicks in at most every other year. Kids are 3,6 and 8, so it's anybody's guess in five years what they will be interested in.

My question is what kind of discounts would Disney run in 2003-2007 that applied to Deluxe properties? Could you often expect to get 10% off rack rates? 20%? more? I did not have an occasion to research Disney vacation packages before then. For us, one of the important factors of DVC membership will be expected pay-as-you-go discounts that may be offered in the future. Any thoughts or recollections?

I don't know the answer, but Mousesavers says this:

* In an ordinary year, if you are going in Value Season or Regular Season, you may save up to 20% -- keep your fingers crossed. If you're going in Summer Season, Peak Season or Holiday Season, don't count on a discount.
* If there is a severe drop in travel due to the economy or other factors, you MIGHT save up to 45% in Value or Regular Season and up to 30% in Summer Season, Peak Season or Holiday Season.

That link is the same page where I got my quote - I didn't link the page though because it didn't go back as far as you asked - the info listed there only started in 2008.

Don't lose sight of the long term.

39 years ago, in 1972 I stayed at the CR and the cost per night was $55.00

A BLT dvc contract lasts for 46 more years.

I don't have any historical information. We have been going to DLR and WDW yearly since 1997. Within that time frame we have gotten some very good deals and then there were times when the best I could get was a AAA discount of 15% on the room and was thrilled to get that!

We are not package people so I have no knowledge of those as we had always preferred to do our room and tickets separate.

Not sure if that was helpful at all, but it likely that the discounts will stop and then again start up again for whatever the reasons.

Once belonging to DVC all the other "promotions" going on will not apply. We chose DVC (just joined this past June) because we wanted the long term commitment and the pre paid room for the next 50 years or so without having to worry about the current cost/promotion at that time.
