Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2025 Edition

Besides, we're now on year 3 of them losing Best Animated Feature and this time to a tiny indie studio who made the winner in freaking Blender. (Which, btw: if you haven't seen Flow, it's streaming on Max and the Oscar was well deserved!!)
I know this is a Disney forum so I'll probably get attacked but....all 3 of those wins were deserved. Even this year every single nominee was better than Inside Out 2. Not saying Inside Out 2 is bad in any way but the other films blew it out of the water.

ITA! I wish Disney would learn from them. Indie animation is having something of a renaissance atm and it's great to see.

What I would love to see is a return to 2D animation even for just 1 movie. I know it'll probably never happen but even a blend of 2D/3D. The sequences in the first Moana with Maui's tattoos coming to life were so cool and I would love to see a whole movie of that.

Bring back Musker and Clements from retirement while you're at it! Pretty much everything they touched was gold!

I would LOVE to see Disney do a 2D animated movie again. I really do miss their 2D films as they feel more timeless than the 3D ones.

Looking at Disney's future theatrical releases, absolutely nothing interests me enough to pay to go see it but I would 100% pay to see a 2D Disney film on the big screen.

Besides Moana? Moana is by far their most successful film!

I mean, I agree, I think Musker & Clements made a lot of great movies, but I wouldn't exclude Moana.
Oh no, I wasn't excluding it! It's one of my favorite movies ever, lol. I meant something along the lines of "even beyond Moana, which is awesome, everything they did was great"

I'll edit for clarity

Okay - it sounded kinda like everything aside from Moana.... I was like, whaaaaat? 😁

I’ve been (slowly) working my way through the catalog and the old hand drawn films have stunning backgrounds. Computer animation comes nowhere near.

No question they are different. Unfortunately, the labor costs are prohibitive to hand-draw all the cells, ink them, then photograph each cell, and assemble them all into a movie. Maybe one day AI can produce animated films that resemble the old stuff.

While I agree that the Tiana show being cancelled does weaken Tiana's Bayou Adventure as a whole....Disney is never going to bring Splash back. That ship (or log) has sailed a long time ago.
Everything I've seen on it has said they plan on doing a short instead, which I'm fine with. I think getting mad about this wrt the ride is silly and the kind of bad faith nonsense that too often dominates discussions of TBA. Splash is not coming back (thank god!). It's been time to move on.
Why do you think the ship has sailed? Remember that Disney abolished their "Reimagine Tomorrow" initiative, which was why they got rid of Splash Mountain.

That's one of my main issues with there being a live action Lilo and Stitch remake. I LOVE the watercolor backgrounds in that film and it really makes it stand out in the Disney film catalog.

Oswald The Lucky Rabbit TV Series From Jon Favreau In Works At Disney+

Over the last decade, Jon Favreau has been a linchpin of Disney+‘s original series slate with flagship The Mandalorian and its offshoots while also taking on classic Disney animated characters on the feature side with the live-action/photorealistically animated The Jungle Book and the photorealistically animated The Lion King. Now he is combining the two with a new series in development at Disney+, Deadline has learned.

The animation/live action hybrid is about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a saucy, self-absorbed bunny. Favreau is writing and producing the project from Walt Disney Studios.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is very important to the Walt Disney Company. The cartoon, which bears close resemblance to Mickey Mouse, has a fractured history with the company and played a pivotal role in the creation of Disney’s most famous animated character. Oswald was created in 1927 by Walt Disney and featured in 27 animated shorts. But after Universal took control of the character in 1928, Disney created a new character as a replacement: Mickey Mouse.

Bringing Oswald home had been a priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger, and The Walt Disney Co. acquired the trademark in 2006.

Favreau created, wrote and executive produced The Mandalorian, which aired on Disney+ from 2019-2023. He also has executive produces Disney+ spinoffs The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Additionally, Favreau directs and produces the upcoming feature offshoot, Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in May 2026.

You tried to convince people that Splash Mountain could be saved both before and during construction of Tiana, I don't know why I'm surprised that you're still doing this but here we are.

The note in bold is false btw. They started developing TBA well before Reimagine Tomorrow. I recommend getting over this and moving on.

Slowly realizing this is how I sound when I talk to people about the Great Movie Ride. MAYBE there's a way to physically move Runaway Railway to Animation Courtyard after all.
