Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

I almost had a heart attack, was waiting at the Concession stand behind a family on Friday, and their bill for popcorn/drinks/snacks was $55!

How can families afford to go to the movies anymore!
I've always heard from family members that used to manage movie theaters that concessions is really where they make their money as they get a very small cut of the ticket price. But it sure is pricey. We don't like popcorn much so it's not hard to resist. Would rather spend the $55 on dinner before the movie.

How many people in the family? The food has always been overpriced and underwhelming. We have Edwards Cinemas (Regal) closest to us but ever since they switched to Pepsi products (ew) I prefer going to AMC even if it's a little further away.

I have the rewards program at both and I usually buy the tickets for my party so I get all the points. I will usually cash in for a free small popcorn and then pay to upgrade, reducing my concession stand cost.

Candy is ridiculous expensive there and it's easier to just to buy some at walmart or target beforehand.

As a former theatre worker, that’s true.

My local theatre has a refillable bucket for $25/year that only costs $2/refill (or $1 with their club) so I can get away with pretty cheap movie trips.

I was a theatre worker when the SatC movie came out, and these 2 ladies snuck in a whole bottle of wine, complete with glass wine glasses. We ended up confiscating it, dumping the wine, and keeping the glasses in the office (until we shattered one with a giant rubber band ball)

Yep, this is true. Without concessions movie theaters would make no profit. That’s why concessions employees try to upsell everyone.

Yes, the way ticket prices are usually structured is that the theater makes more money the longer the film is showing. Like, on the first weekend, the studio gets 95% of the take. In week two, they get 90%, and it slides down. Those movies that stick around a while and still draw people in, start to make more for the theater than the studio. That's how you would get those second-run theaters where they charged like 2 bucks, but they got almost all of it.

Of course, most people do hit the movies early after they come out, so selling concessions and other extras is crucial.

Tiana’s Foods Water Tower To Be Installed Soon at Magic Kingdom

As part of a Celebrate Soulfully press release, Disney World suggested that guests keep an eye out at the construction site for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure because the centerpiece Tiana’s Foods water tower will be installed “soon”. An exact date or timeframe was not announced. Here’s the relevant part of the press release:
As construction continues on Magic Kingdom Park’s much-anticipated Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, guests will soon be able to see the centerpiece of the attraction, Tiana’s Foods water tower, topped by her signature tiara.

Saw Elemental today--very good!

I feel bad that box office returns are low. Audience scores are very high but I think people are just waiting for it to be on Disney+.

Meaning to go but so weird lately

Finally just saw Frozen 2 which has the elements/characters (very good by the way), and just finished the animated series Avatar Last Air bender. Which is of course about Tribes that master Water, Air, Earth and Fire. Also weirdly good and funny-but gearing up for the new Live actions series in process. Re-watched Inside Out, very good and of course not the same as actual elements.

Anyway, it just didn't feel very original at this point. Will see it some day though.

Actually, it's nothing like any of those stories. Look beyond the elements part, which is really only sorta akin to Avatar from what you listed... but only if you squint... lol

I think it's pretty original. The story is about inter-cultural acceptance and balancing the need to help one's family because of everything they sacrificed with one's own desires.

Plus, the animation effects they developed for the elements are really cool!

I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The previews looked blah. DH wanted to see a movie for Father's Day, and the Flash was right out. It was a really good movie, good story, and excellent animation.

As for movie prices, my mom often gives us a $100 gift card to Alamo Drafthouse for xmas. They sell actual food and drinks with an actual waiter that comes around. The gift card usually is gone for 1 movie for the 3 of us, when we eat dinner. We usually have at least 1 drink apiece as well. Other than vacations though, it's our only real form of entertainment.
