Disney’s Live-Action ‘Moana’ Taps ‘Hamilton’ Helmer Thomas Kail as Director

Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s Hamilton, has been tapped to direct Disney’s live-action take on the studio’s 2016 animated musical sensation Moana.

Disney announced the remake earlier this spring and has secured Dwayne Johnson to return to the role of Maui, the grandiose demigod of the wind and sea.

Johnson is producing via his Seven Bucks Productions along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Beau Flynn is also producing via Flynn Picture Co.

Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, penned the remake, along with Dana Ledoux Miller.

Absolutely not. I think this new plan is especially not a good value if you don't drink alcohol. But this is coming from one of the "unfavorable guests" that brings their own snacks into the park, so lol
And to add, if you're a vegetarian, it's even worse. I did a full comparison years ago before DDP went away. It would have cost a few hundred more to have the dining plan than to pay out of pocket for the veggie options since they typically run cheaper than the meat options. For me, the main benefit I see for DDP is the convenience of not having to worry about spending on

Sheesh. Moana is only seven years old.
Moana is a teenager, I believe 16 in the movie.

Why do we need to do a live action version of it?
Moana was well received globally. Disney is in Live Action mode - maybe it's more profitable, maybe it's easier than sequels, likely it can be produced faster .... but it is what it is.

The 3D computer animation was already pretty realistic.
I thought it was a beautiful colorful quality animation but it wasn't realistic.

Just comparing The Little Mermaid animated to Live Action / CGI - it's a completely different experience. If they create a quality movie like LM, I look forward to it.

I think the previous poster was referring to the movie being 7 years old as it just came out in 2016.
Got it. Thank you.

In that respect, other than some old classics Disney probably should capitalize on movies while they are still fresh and enjoyed. I don't think most Disney movies have had the pleasure of longevity to the wider audience.

In 30+ years (The Little Mermaid gap) I doubt anyone or their children will be invested in Moana and many other "successful" movies that seemed to come and go. I don't think we'll see Coco, Encanto, Tangled, Cars and more on repeat. Cash it while it still has a place. And perhaps part of their reasoning is how often things are watched on D+.

The alcoholic beverage would be the extra $10 but that only works if you drink.

The plans aren’t valuable for us if we pay OOP. They could work if they still offer free dining in a value or moderate, especially as a family of 4. There’s no room discount that would be enough of a discount to feed all 4 of us.

We’ve paid OOP for food our last 3 or so trips and I prefer it. We eat how and when we want.

I know people like getting it for convenience factors but you also need to take into account if someone gets sick and can’t use credits for several days. What would you do with all of those TS credits that go unused?
The one and only time we did a 2-day dining plan (since we had a split stay and wanted to try it - we had some pretty good ADRs booked that made it worth it for just the first leg of our stay). On day one I got violently ill after eating at a WDW restaurant.

What happens is...the rest of your party tries to eat as much as they possibly can to use up those credits! lol. DDP is a one-and-done for us!

Do it if you can!!! Especially for their Halloween party. If you're interested also check out Knott's. It's so close to Disneyland (like 15 minutes away).

We did Knott's for the first time last summer. Loved it! I don't think I can go to Disneyland without hitting Knott's for at least a day. We are planning to do the Boysenberry Festival in March for our first VDH DVC stay. Their xmas and Halloween stuff looks amazIng! The chicken dinner house was so good.

I was surprised it was getting remade that soon, too. The movie is very popular, back on top of streaming on Disney+ after Encanto took the spot for like a year. I don't think it needed a remake yet... Maybe they were running out of the classics for remakes

If they want to revisit classics, I wish they'd take the approach of doing more spinoff stories with (e.g. Malificent) rather than remaking every movie, esp the newer ones.

I don't look at the Live Action movies as remakes, just as a different take on the franchise. So many of the original animated Disney movies are based on old fairy tales that have been around for more than a hundred years, and have been adapted many, many times.

I'm not a huge fan of the Disney animated Little Mermaid, but thought the live action movie was beautifully filmed, and overall very good.

Yeah, but in some cases, they are barely different takes at all. Other than visually, the stories are exactly the same. They sometimes add a little backstory, though that can be both good and bad. Personally, I prefer the ones that really deviate and do give us somethign different. Also, it's one thing to revisit an older movie that is maybe fine, but not truly great, and another to remake a stone cold masterpeice like Beauty and the Beast (and to a lesser extent The Little Mermaid). It's like remaking Citizen Kane or Casablanca!
