Disney movies you avoid with your kids?

wow ----- we cruised with a table mate that wouldn't let her 4 year old watch Alice or PP due to the fantasy content. She about fell under the table when I told her my 18 month old sat through the entire Harry Potter movie.

My brother and sister in-law wouldn't let their children watch Aladdin because of the magic.:confused3

Is it bad for your children to know what a cross dresser is? My 6 yr old openly talks about lesbians/gays and anything related to that :confused3

For me and my family, not bad at all, but I'd sure be curious how they knew what one was when they were maybe 5-8 years old.

One thing that was pointed out to me in my marketing class was that all Disney films have tabbaco and/or alcohol use.
Interesting...

Not ALL Disney films have tobacco and/or alcohol use. The Lion King, for example, doesn't. There must be more, but I don't have time to think about it. Cinderella?

I always hated the scene in Dumbo when they get drunk and hallucinate! :confused3

I will agree that it is interesting how they feel the need to include those things in children's films.

I would not let my kids watch Hercules (sp) because of more than one God

Wow - really? You don't want your children to know anything about the beliefs of the rest of the world? I go out of my way to expose my daughters to those things......:confused3

no I do not want that at all. Nor would I want to go out of my way to do any of the sort. We worship the one true God... Jesus

I think its normal society- why wouldnt they know about stuff like that? I cant believe how sheltered some of the kids of the people in this thread are going to be. I am proud to say my kids have a very good sense of REAL life. Real life that includes different gods, different sexes/interests in sexes, even magic! Your kids are just going to realize what a bunch of liars you were during their childhood when they have to play catch up on years of real life instances just to understand how the world works. I am also happy that my kids feel comfortable enough to discuss issues that come up- instead of feeling ashamed to talk about it because you obviously hid it from them so there must be something wrong with it...

So do we. We still enjoy learning about the beliefs of other cultures - it's very intriguing. Our minister also supports this. Christians shouldn't be threatened by the religious beliefs of others. We should learn about them and respect them.

I think you better go back and read the posts again, because I am not the one that stopped my kids from watching Mulan...so to call me a liar is way off the mark IMO. In fact I said in a previous post that I never felt the need to shield my kids from any movies-Disney or otherwise. I'm going to assume you are seriously mistaken on who posted what and leave it at that.

I don't lie to my kids, never said I did. We may not discuss cross dressing, but only because it hasn't come up-if it did, I'm more than happy to tell my kids exactly what it is.

Sorry you thought that was directed towards you- its the general thread

Since you quoted my post I definitely felt it was directed at me. Whatever...doesn't apply to me in the end.

I quoted your post in regards to how they would know about that- but then I just got frustrated thinking about all the stupid things people were saying in here and I kind of got sidetracked. :yay:

Well, I understand your frustration about the thread in general. I admit that I too don't agree with hiding things from my kids or shielding them from other lifestyles or religions, but I guess each family is entitled to their own beliefs and way of parenting.

I think as a parent it is your job to take the information provided and teach you rchildren something. Example: I am a feminist and really don't like the whole princess thing. But, DD does....she is obsessed with princesses....preschool introduced this stuff and now I deal with it in my way. I am not going to forbid it I just put my own spin on things....with Snow White we talk about how the animals love her and maybe she is a vet or a Geriatric Specialist (since those little people need her to heplout so much). Cinderella is in training for running a major corporation (I mean really teh corporate world is a backstabbing as those ugly step-sisters, right?). Mulan a military leader, Little Mermaid marine biology, etc....

I hope that by encouraging her loves ans yet instilling my beliefs she will turn out to be a great person!!!

There's no movie I outright avoid. We do skip various "Lion King" scenes, opening scene of "Nemo", hunter scene in "Bambi". My kids have seen the scenes at one point or another but they are scary and I try to cut down on the excess.

I always hated the scene in Dumbo when they get drunk and hallucinate! .

Oh I hate that scene too! They've asked me a couple times what's going on and I have no idea how to explain it! I always hated when my mom poorly explained things that made her uncomfortable but in this case, I have no clue what to say! I think I referred to it as "silly soda".

I will agree that it is interesting how they feel the need to include those things in children's films.

I find it funny but I also find this one line in "Nemo" SO inappropriate.
"Don't they realize we're swimming in our own sh-----." Why does it need to be there ..... and why do so many mothers get killed! My 5 yo has a friend whose mom died in childbirth and as is, she wonders if I'll die (soon). Explaining why Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Bambi, Nemo, Lilo, etc, etc all have dead or non-existent mothers is so odd.....

We haven't really skipped anything. My son hasn't watched all the movies, but he's not yet 2. My DD however has watched just about every Disney animated movie and several regular ones (like Pirates).

I've never really thought about to much about the content other than the fact that most of the mothers are dead/absent. She's never even mentioned that.

I knew a family that wouldn't let their daughter watch the little mermaid because Ariel is disobedient and doesn't listen to her dad when he tells her to never go to the surface or associate with land people she goes ahead and does so. We fast forward through sections of different movies. I haven't let my son (2yr) watch monsters inc. coz I don't need him to be afraid of his closet. I don't really like Lilo and Stitch the series (kinda violent and they seem to always be yelling at each other) and it seems to me that in most disney movies one or more parents are dead or dies....if you want Christian themed cartoons we much prefer Boz the bear just because it shows both parents and two kids and character building themes or what I call "safe"programming.
