Disney movies you avoid with your kids?

My DD is very creative also!!! She is often other characters and has numerous imaginary friends!!! The bird thing....been through that!!!!

I'm glad to see someone else whose DD has imaginary friends!!! :woohoo: I was starting to get worried about mine :rolleyes1 ....I can't keep track of all of her "friends". Kids are so imaginitive sometimes! It's hard to think that someday, they'll grow out of all that stuff. :sad1: Sorry to be so OT....:upsidedow

The thing is, my kids don't even know what "Injuns" are! In Peter Pan they look like very red people wearing feathers and dancing around fires. They are no more real to them than the mermaids in Mermaid Lagoon or the pirates on Hook's ship! They don't understand that "Injun" is a reference to Indian, which is being used to describe Native Americans rather than people from India. They don't realize that there are still pirates in the world today, but they look nothing like the pirates in Peter Pan or Pirates of the Caribbean. All of that is above their heads. One day when they are older and know more about the world I expect we will talk about it, but right now Peter Pan and the like fall squarely into fantasy, and bear no relation to anything real in the world.

The kids need to learn that every work of fiction is the imagination and interpretation of its authors, and is not always based on reality. As they grow older they will learn what is "real" from reading, watching real life shows on TV (National Geograhpic, Discovery etc., which my kids already love) and school. They will realize for themselves that Native Americans are nothing like they are portrayed on Peter Pan.

I agree 100%!

We worship one God as well........BUT we don't re-write or eliminate history because of this. The historical signifacance of Hercules is fact - and knowledge of such things only assists in furthering reading skills. But to each his/her own....

Therefore we also allow for "injuns" and Song of the South....the same reason we don't censor Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.

NOW that said....even though I have an almost 12 year old son, we don't "do" the Pirates series....we're not saying never, I just personally prefer that alcohol (and its overuse) not be seen as something entertaining and oddly endearing, and the focus on death was not something we wanted to emphasize. Again, never say never....instead we say "Nah...not yet....";)

One day we are going to see Orwell's depiction come true when we start re-releasing movies with removal or changes to "offensive" scenes.
We do that already every evening - it's called the news. Take your choice of CNN(Communist News Network) or Fairly Unbalanced Fox, it's all the same, just a different spin. If people saw the true extent of war, poverty, disease, starvation, and the way they are manipulated, world goverments would crumble.

DW and I do have a pet peeve tho. My son somehow latched on to the word "stupid". We keep telling him it is a bad/ugly word to say but every popular Disney movie has it. Worse yet, there is a store next to his karate school called "stupid prices". We can't win.....

What's wrong with "stupid"? There really are stupid people in the world. Identifying them is a survival skill. Life isn't warm and fuzzy - it's not a walk through WDW.

Oh i dont like the word stupid either.. infact my kids NEVER used it til they heard it in cars, now its stupid this stupid that... arrrrrggggghhh that really makes me sad :( I tell them its a bad word but like that stops kids from using it!:rolleyes1

my kids 2,4,6 can watch any disney animated film. However, we do avoid nick toons in general because i do not like the rude humor. the only animated movie i have had a problem with was the first ice age. a parent of a friend of my daughter (2 at the time) recommended it to us. I got it for us to watch, and she freaked out. The main bad guys are tigers wanting to eat a human baby "cub" being protected by the stars. Once the first attack occured, my daughter stood on the couch and was screaming "dont eat the baby" and crying. I tried to turn it off and she was even worse. i kept telling her the baby would be fine, but she did not believe it until she saw it herself. Everytime the bad guys came on we chanted "go away bad guys" to aviod a melt down, but if we didn't she would have been hysterical each time. we had to watch the entire movie to prove to her the baby lived. needless to say, i told the other mother the movie did not go to well due to the fact that the animals were trying to eat a child and it scared my daughter. I also said she might want to mention that part next time she recommended the movie to a parent of a young child.

Wow. I don't ban any Disney movies, but just reading these posts reminds me of two that really do bother me.

Hunchback- I watched it with my little sisters when I was in high school. I was supremely creeped out by the sexual undertones (or overtones?) in the movie- it just really, really creeped me out and I didn't want my little sisters watching it (I'm sure they never noticed those issues- they were too young).

Fox and the Hound? Utterly, terribly depressing. Just breaks MY OWN heart.

Lion King- I love that movie. My favorite Disney movie- that and Beauty and the Beast. Simba may have lost his father in the physical world, but he still exists- in his heart ;)

As far as banning Disney Movies for our 8 year old of course we do-remember that there are a lot of Disney movies that are rated PG13 and others that just aren't for kids. However, I think the OP meant the typical animated Disney movies.
I have to admist that I too always wondered about Beauty and the Beast. It is a typical cycle of domestic violence. It bothers me that a beautiful, smart woman is kept hostage by a "beast." He loses his temper at her, then invites her to dinner and picks her flowers. Then he blows up at her, but saves her from the wolves and thus the cycle of abuse continues. Finally, Belle manages to change the beast that is until the sequel.
