This will be DS (9) first time trading. I'm not worried about fakes...I just want him to have fun.
That being said, we got several pins from Disney Movie Club and Disney Movie Rewards. I have certificates of authenticity (we're not going to carry those around though!), but these pins don't look like the other official trading pins on the back. Are we likely to encounter rudeness if we trade these? Is it bad form to trade these?

I don't know for certain. Perhaps if you posted a picture that might get some better input (both front and back of pin). The other option I would try would be to try at a pin board at one of the resort gift shops. Not a lot of interaction with the CM at the pin boards.

I'm not at home right now, but the picture is a good idea. This is a picture from the Disney Movie Club website. The pins are $4.95 for VIP members (sometimes they are given free with purchase). The back has the little black Mickey holder, but it just says "Disney Movie Club Made in China" and has some numbers. Like I said, they are real collector pins...I have certificates of authenticity...I just don't know if the only pins that are allowed to be traded are ones that say "official trading pins."

I don't want to carry around the certificates in the parks, and I also don't want someone to get rude with my son (he's a little shy) because they think it isn't a real pin. I mean if they see the pin and just don't want it, that's fine.

I don't think anyone can say for certain but most CM's will not refuse a pin trade even if the pin is obviously fake. That is why they often have scrappers and fakes on their lanyards. Not to say you could not run across the .01% that would but chances are greatly in your favor. My best guess is that technically these pins are not meant to be park traders.

If the prospect of scrappers does not bother you, just buy a lot on ebay. At this point 99% of the pins on lanyards are usually scrappers anyway. Not trying to be negative but it is just the reality these days.

We bought some on Ebay, but I paid more and they were sets in cardboard and plastic with Disney price tags, new in bag, so I am guessing they are more likely to be real (I think it was $50 for 25 new pins versus the $50 for 100 random used pins)...I bought them for trading BUT my son doesn't want to trade them because he likes them too much. Hoarder? LOL (I was willing to "lose" $2 a pin if he got a scrapper that he liked because he liked it). Maybe he will be more willing to trade once he gets into it?
The Disney Movie Club pins and Disney Movie Rewards pins I got for free with rewards or buying a movie or I paid $5, so I got duplicates of some of them...he is willing to trade his duplicates.

My DD11 has been doing the pin thing for the last 3 years or so purely for fun and chooses to collect solely what appeals to her. As a result, I am certain most of what she collects and trades are scrappers, but we have never encountered a CM (lanyard or pin board) that refused a trade with her. Our experiences have actually always been nothing but positive and are a highlight of each trip for her.

Nice resource there. I wouldn't be worried about the DMC pins.

Collector. There are traders and there are collectors. Doesn't sound like he's a trader. My family isn't, either. If we get a pin it's because we like it. So why would we get rid of it?
I was kind of hoping for a hybrid, some pins we bought because I thought he would like them...if possible I bought 2 (I got 2 Baymax pins for $4.95 each) so he could trade one...others like the lot on Ebay, I bought specifically to trade (but tried not to get scrappers, hence, buying the ones that were packaged and $2 a pin), but he liked them ALL, all 25 of them, even characters from movies he hasn't seen. lol

LOL! My DD is the same way. I bought (likely from the same Ebay seller since she is one known to sell real pins) the authentic pins which were more expensive than the lots of scrappers that you can pick up for about 50 cents a piece. They were all booster sets on cardboard, in original packaging, with the Disney price tags. DD likes them so much she wants to keep more than half of the 25 pins we received. This happened the last time I purchased from this seller too. I thought after receiving the package this time that I should have asked if the seller had pins from characters and movies that I know DD doesn't like so she'd be more likely to want to trade them. Next time, I'm might request "no princess or fairy pins, please" when I place the order to increase our likelihood of getting pins that DD will want to trade.

I should have requested ALL princesses LOL

Makes sense. :) Try trading the extras, see how he does.

DH wanted to trade and wanted DS to do it as well, but we started when DS was too young. He didn't get that trades are permanent. We stopped when DS traded with DH and then DH traded that pin with a stranger, and then DS wanted it back. Ruh roh.

And then DH realized that the only pins he had were ones that I had bought specially for him (like Mr Incredible because DH had worked so many hours to afford our first big family trip to Disneyland...or a CM pin from Hong Kong that's a Mickey with a yingyang symbol...there's one that is made now for purchase but it isn't as neat) and he wasn't allowed to trade those. :) I'll admit that it gets hard to wear a lanyard with cool pins when you don't trade, because trading kids don't always understand why you would wear the pins if you're not trading! (some adults, too)

Maybe next time we can coordinate our purchases and I'll send you all the princesses and fairies we get and you can send us all the ones your son likes so we can ensure both kids want to trade what they have. :rotfl:

You will not have trouble trading the Disney Movie Club and Movie Reward pins because they were issued by Disney and they fit all the criteria listed in the Pin Trading guidelines.

We've seen very obvious scrappers and sometimes damaged pins on pinboards/lanyards so I would think it rare that a CM would refuse a trade. CMs will accept any pin that fits the Disney criteria as long as they don't already have it on their lanyard or pinboard. Some CMs have said they will remove the obvious scrappers backstage before the next day.

You can go to pinpics to find photos of thousands of Disney pins including the Movie Club ones.

you wouldn't be willing to PM me this seller, would you? With sugar on top?!

This is 100% absolutely allowable! ;) Happy Trading!

I wouldn't trade movie club pins... they can gain some value over time. I would suggest going to the disney outlet before your trip and buying some lanyard pins for a discount, and trading the doubles.

The only movie club pins he is trading are ones we got duplicates of---we just got a cool Cinderella slipper one and there is NO WAY he is selling that one because I like it too much. I figured I'd rather him trade a $4.95 pin than a $10 one.
