My DW and I just received our free WDW Vacation Planning Kit on DVD and it was very impressive. Much better than the free videos of the past. We highly recommend ordering it. It got us very excited for our January 25th trip. But we noticed that the DVD refers to Disney MGM Studios as DISNEY STUDIOS now. So did they drop the MGM title? If so, why?

I haven't seen the whole DVD yet--I've been hiding it from DS because it is part of his birthday surprise! But, I did notice that too and thought it odd. I'm sure someone here has the answer.

Tag Fairy--It's a new year, I'm 1 day past my 35th birthday, and I'm still clappin' and still believin'!!!!! I know you're out there somewhere--others have received their tags lately--I've rejoiced with them (and was secretly jealous!!!!)

From what I understand, MGM can only be used in park, but don't quote me on that.

Interesting, because the written materials in the planning kit refer to it as Disney-MGM

This has been a long time arguement, between the two companies. Needless to say wdw prefers cms to refer to it as the Disney Studios as MGM has nothing to do with running it and their logo and use of their movies is the only contribution MGM makes. So that is why you will here the park referred to as the Disney Studios.

This issue of what the park is to be actually called has been going on since at least 1996. We were told then that the park would start being called: Walt Disney Studios well, for whatever reason, it seems to flip-flop every other time we visit....we actually have shirts and other souveniers from 1996-1997 with only "Disney Studios" on them....no mention of the "mgm" oh well, as long as rockin' rollercoaster stays open...I'm good..

Well, I had heard in another thread that sounded like they knew what they were talking about, that it was a legal issue. Apparently in the contract when the park first opened, there was a clause that Disney was to construct an MGM-themed ride within the first 10 years after park opening. MGM contended that they didn't do that, and took Disney to court, and actually won. And apparently stemming from that court case, Disney lost the rights to use the MGM name for advertising outside of Florida, so that they had to block out the MGM name in the videos sent out in the mail. I don't think the name of the theme park is changing, just that they can't advertise it as "Disney-MGM Studios" outside of Florida. Ridiculous legal stuff LOL, at least that's the story I've heard.
