Disney Magic Cruise Ship Fireworks

Hi All!

My family and I are getting ready to sail on the Disney Magic for the first time in March. We have previously sailed on the Dream twice and on the Fantasy once. We are looking forward to the re-imagined classic ship!

Since sailing on our first cruise I have really taken an interest in photography. I have been looking for some information and example shots of the fireworks on the Disney Magic, but I have not been incredibly successful.

I have found Trey Ratcliff's photo on the Disney Fantasy and would love to be able to have an awesome composition similar to his. You can find his at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2012/0...disney-cruise/

Mind you, I am not nearly as talented as Trey nor do I have his processing skills. If any of you have shots from the classic ships or any information you could share like places to set up or what area of the ship the fireworks are released from that would be terrific.

I did search it and found the photos they are beautiful... I agree I hope we did get some good information!

I will also be on that cruise so if you see another crazy person running around talking photos feel free to say hi haha

Look forward to meeting you. ISO5571 is definitely great. The guys at disneyphotographyblog.com and *****************.com definitely don't do anything to help my wallet, but they are definitely very educational and entertaining to read and listen to!

You will need a tripod. An exposure like that is about 5 seconds long. No possible way you can hand hold the camera and get that.

My suggestion.... mount the camera on the tripod. Use a wireless remote to trip the shutter. If you don't have a wireless remote then use the self timer. This way you can push the shutter button and have a 2 second delay before the shutter opens so you won't get any camera shake from pushing the shutter.

Your ISO should be low.... 200. F/stop anywhere from f/8 to f/11 and your shutter speed can be anywhere from 4 to 10 seconds. These would be very typical settings for any firework display with the camera on a tripod.

If you plan on getting parts of the ship in your shots, a UWA lens will definitely help.

Here is a photo taken on the Wonder last January (have never been on the Magic). This was taken with a 16-35 Wide Angle lens - 10 second exposure, f/9.5, ISO 400. Plus a neutral density filter. Still a little long, but I'd forgotten my remote cord, so was guessing. It was so windy, I set up the tripod on top of a table on the starboard side of the top deck which had a windscreen behind it.

Here's a version after correcting for the wide angle effect, and it's also a composite of several bursts:

Just got off the Dream yesterday. Fireworks were delayed a day by weather - once again, it was very windy. I setup on Deck 13 in front of Currents. Shots are 6-10 seconds, f/8, ISO 125, .6 ND filter, 16-35mm lens at 16mm (but these are cropped after perspective corrections):

Next time, I would go all the way over to the port side on deck 13, or maybe even try 12. I wasn't sure how the wind would affect the placement of the fireworks.
