We are new to camping and just returned from a holiday trip to the fort and loved every bit of it. Does anyone know of any campgrounds that compare to the quality of Fort Wilderness in the northeast?

We live in NH and would like to stay within 10 hours of driving.

Thanks,

In my opinion, nothing really compares to Disney... However there are some other campgrounds that we really like... In Myrtle Beach there are Ocean Lakes, Pirateland and Lakeshores (we've stayed at all 3 and like them all for different reasons)... Also Castaways in Ocean City Md...Cedar Point in Ohio and Lake George RV Park. Good luck and enjoy camping! We've been doing for 13 years with our 3 sons... No better way to travel!

Were facing the same dilemma...Convinced DH to buy a camper...He's never camped...But the kids and I have and loved it! One of our first trips obviously is the Fort, and on the way home we're stopping for a few nights at Ocean Lakes. After that trip in June, I dont know what could compare! :) Am looking forward to hearing everyone's suggestions!:goodvibes

Glad to hear this...Booked at Castaways for the first time this summer with a large group! :cool1:

Enjoy! We really loved it... When you go to OC be sure to eat/drink at Seacrets.... Great atmosphere... Even better if you go without the kids, lol (the restaurant is cool, but the bar is amazing... Actually has tables in the water!)

We also love Castaways! It's our Memorial Day adventure with friends every year and it never disappoints. As far as it comparing to the Fort... ummm, well, it doesn't.

In all honesty, not much does. The Fort typically ranks in the top 3 to 5 campgrounds in the entire country each year by the Travel Channel. It's tough to beat.

We planned a long weekend at a somewhat local amusement/water park a few months after coming home from Disney in 2007. On the second day, I turned to my DH and said I just wasn't "feelin' it". He responded, "of course not, I didn't pay an extra 3 grand for someone to blow sunshine up your.... (you know what I mean) while we are here". So, there you have it...

I haven't stayed at the Fort yet, we go for 11 days in June, but I have walked through. Based upon that and the places I have camped I can only think of two that can compare, one is the Holiday Trav-l-park in VA Beach which might be far from you and the other is Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach which is really far from you.

We went to Martha's Vineyard Family Campground last summer and will go every summer from now on. If I can't go to Fort Wilderness, I would pick this campground in a heartbeat.

I wish !! You are talking a different level of civilized than just pretty open space.
How about, does anyone know any CG that almost compare, anywhere? Just in case any of us are ever in that neck of the woods?

And have to say, Katherine, I'm green with envy :thumbsup2 that you have so many options relatively close. What a wonderful world ! With a kid the perfect age, young enough to share it with for stays to come!

There's a great old family camping website, by a Dad camper named Pete,

(I really recommend spending reading sometime, if anyone has kids, camps, and hasn't been there. great packing ideas and lists.)

http://home.gwi.net/~spectrum/camping.html

And he says on there, that there is a family camping 'sweet spot' of golden years that are limited to camp with the kids, cause they grow up so fast and things change. It's his last posts, his goodbye page. So sad, nostalgic.

Didn't believe it.
But it's true. I can see our "whole family golden time" end down the road. It's been great.
Katherine, Go try out those sites! I wish you more!

There is only one FW, specail in its own way!......there are however lots of other 1st rate campground.

this is the start of the camping show season, I suggest you go to some local shows, there are always many campgrounds there and lot sof guides free !

Boston has one in January!

Normandy Farms campground in Foxborough Ma. is a high end campground and not that far from you.

Normandy Farms is our Disney North we are actually spending April Vacation there this year. Also, our VERY VERY close second is Lake George RV park, it is amazing as well!

Thank you all so much! We started researching the campgrounds and we are going to book at a few of them during the summer. Lake George will be our first stop.

Keep the suggestions coming, I realize now what a tall order it is to find Disney like campgrounds.

Thanks again

My goodness, you have me crying here at my computer. Thank you so much for reminding me to cherish the time with my little one.

We stayed at Castaways last year ... it was great! There is car rental nearby and we loved going to Lewes, DE and Ocean City. Don't miss the quaint town of Berlin, MD

Thanks for the input. We are not set up to tow a car yet, and the rest of the group says you absolutely need one there. Do you know how far the car rental is, or what it is called? We may want to reserve something in advance if we are not set up to tow by then. Or, are there any cabs there?

Not sure if it is within a 10 hr drive, but we enjoyed Hershey Highmeadow Campground. They had a free shuttle for Hershey Park and Hershey World. They have special activities for campers and the campground itself was very clean and modern.

Normandy Farms is really nice. It is definitely a resort type campground. Bathrooms are very clean, 2 pools, hot tub. Lots of activities.

We really liked Danforth Bay Campground near Lake Ossipee, NH. It has more of a old time resort feel with a really nice lakefront. There's lots to do for families or adults. The only thing missing is a hot tub. We were very pleased with the staff and the grounds. It has two pools and every other amenity you could ask for. And the most important thing...the bathrooms were very clean.

:rotfl:

Fort Wilderness has the cleanest bathrooms I've every seen. These two are a close second.
