Disney Land Purchase in North Carolina

I heard a rumor today from a coworker who just returned from Wilmington, North Carolina (where she also owns a condo and beach property). She said she heard over Easter that Disney has purchased 200+ acres in Brunswick County, North Carolina, and her understanding was that it was going to be used for another park.

Does anyone out there know anything about this? I know several years ago there were rumors about NC/SC after Disney was turned away from Virginia . Is this info just more of the same old talk, or is something going on? If it's true, could it possibly be a site for another Vacation Club property? Anything, anybody?

Don't make any bets!

I do think a DVC resort would make more sense there, and I would certainly visit. But the weather could be an issue. It's beautiful there, but the winters still get cold, so it might not be too popular that time of year.

200 acres is far too small for another theme park and NC is far too chose to WDW. Another DVC resort is not out of the question or Disney may just sit on it for a few years....

Well, not too long ago they were planning to open a park in Virginia... so I don't think NC would be "too close". A DVC would be nice, but with the issues with sales at HH and VB... I'd think they'd try for a more "popular" location...

It should be rather easy to do some searches for NC real estate transactions... NC newpapers, etc...

Depending on traffic, Wilimington's less than an hour's drive north from Myrtle Beach. We luv MB, but it's expanded at alarming rates over the past 25 years & traffic into MB from I-95 & mid-town gets near gridlock @ times. Would be nice to have a DVC alternative, pref. on the beachfront.

The shoulder season would be good for golfing. Plus most of the high-end resorts in MB have extensive indoor pool complexes, including lazy rivers & hot tubs; assume DVC would get on the bus & include it in any development to compete.

Very interesting...thanks for posting.:thumbsup2

I am not adding to the rumor or discounting it either. One thing about NC and Wilmington area is the film making studios. Lots of TV and movies are produced in Wilmington. If the rumor were true, it could be for a new studio and have nothing to do with the public or the parks.

::yes:: I think this is the most plausible explanation. There sure is a lot of production in Wilmington.

Way to small. I think WDW is like 7500 Acres.

Sounds like a possible hotel as well if this is true. I bet if true it is for investment and they sell the land for a profit.

While I won't put any credence in the NC rumor, 200 acres is not a small tract of land even for a theme park. That is twice the size of MK, nearly three times the size of DL. I am not suggesting in any way that this tract of land is ever destined to be a theme park, or that such a tract of land even exists. Just pointing out that a tract that size is such that a theme park COULD be built (especially if vertical parking was used, like US--Orlando)

In Fla they bought the land bit by bit through a front corporation (maybe more than one) so no one would know who was buying and the prices wouldn't increase on them. If they plan to build a theme park in NC they are possibly doing this. In that scenario, the 300 acres would only be part of the purchase.

For those of you familiar with Brunswick, NC would you go to a DVC resort there if there were no park? What's the attraction there?

Most likely it's an empty rumor, but it's fun to speculate.

My SIL came back from Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago and told me that they are building a Disney park in the area. I just said, "Hmmmm." So someone out there is telling people something.

I remember in newspaper articles back in the early 90's when Disney was looking at Myrtle Beach. There was no explenation on what was to be used with the land they were looking at. THe reporter just assumed it would be for the American History park that failed in VA. THe area of intrest was the old airforce base and/or Broadway area.

What ended up happening was Disney either purchased or leased land at HHI and built a Time Share. I thank the Lord that Disney picked HHI over the "Redneck Riverea." (i poke fun at my heritage) MB has become a place I would rather not visit.

So any way, that is a very old rumor that was half true, but they did not end up with the purchase in MB

When they heard the rumor they were purchasing a timeshare. Hopefully this is not an underhanded sales tactic!

About 12 years ago, I had a friend who worked for a realty office. Disney bought up quite a few parcels of land northwest of the Twin Cities. It was speculated they were doing some sort of tie into the MOA. Obviously, nothing came of that, and when Camp Snoopy was up for sale, Disney wasn't there to snatch it up! Relax....rumors are rumors. :p

I live in Raleigh, and Wilmington NC is my favorite in-state place to visit. It's an old port city with a lot of history. There's a nice carriage ride through the historical houses downtown, and a dinner river cruise in the evenings. The beaches in the area range from heavily built up (Carolina beach) to less crowded (Kure Beach) to some state parks with no build-up at all.

Would I go to a resort if one opened there? Absolutely yes.
