Disney Kennel Rumor

Per the management of the Epcot Kennel the following information was told to my wife and myself recently.

Disney is looking into (with the additional funding from Purina), to building a Kennel "hub" complex for long term and limited short term stays.

Right now the Disney kennel system, while owned by one entity, each is managed individually and the computer systems are NOT linked. We found this out the hard way by not bringing papers to the second kennel.

However, per the manager of the Epcot kennel, the park kennels will remain open for day visiting animals and a new, large overnight and (limited) short stay kennel. The new kennel will contain a staff 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including a veterinarian on staff 24 hours per day.

It will also be set up like a doggie spa (for those willing to put the $$$$ into it). It looks like they are finding there may be more of a profit possibility in this, as most people who bring their animals to the parks with them are crazy about them (which we are).

The kennel will offer longer walks, larger kennel areas with much more comfort for animals, like beds and various comfort items.

They will offer actual doggy massages, doggy (and other animals) baths, grooming, etc.

It will also offer 24 hour access to your pet (verified by security).

I asked how far they are from finalizing this. She said she "thinks" it is very close but it's up to upper management to sign off on it. No word on where it would be located, but it "may" be closer to the MK or AK than anyplace else.


Now, this was not a park CM but a manager of the kennel. However, I only take employees word with a grain of salt but, I hope to see this in the near future and will be finding out more about this very soon from an employee within the kennel system who also was aware of this recent news that was passed to the epcot kennel. I dont know if the same information was shared with each kennel as this person worked at another kennel and only informed about if after working a day in the epcot kennel.

That's great news to me. I'd love to be able to bring my dog and have her on property so I can visit, rather then leave her home. I haven't used the kennel, it looks like it's just smaller sized crates at this time, and I'd feel bad leaving her there. If they make a bigger facility, I will surely bring her my next trip.

Cool! We have a spoiled rotten Shih Tzu that does not do well when boarded at the vets. Maybe this is an alternative to leaving him at home to pout with daily visitors.....

How do Disney's kennels work now? Do they only board during the day and you have to pick your pets at night, or can you keep them in the kennel, including overnights, for the duration of your stay on Disney property? We have 2 Boxers who love road trips, but we always board them here and fly down, so I'd be interested to know.

I have been telling my DH that Disney should do this for years! With many Americans as pet crazy as they are (me included - 4 spoiled rotten malteses), Disney could really do this up right at make a nice profit. I am sure many guests would love the doggy spa aproach. I wonder how much the prices will increase? aw:

They need to keep up with the times, and the growing # of folks who instead of kids, bring thier Pets on vacation! My Vet charges 12.50 a day, (times 2) for us and they FEED them and someone stays overnight at the kennel too.

Long years ago, I actually wrote to Disney and told them that I would love to see them do a Pet Resort type experience for folks that wanted to bring their pets. I told them that their kennels were not magical at all and that they were missing the boat on some $$$ from people like me. Well, I got the email returned with a semi-nasty note from the legal department. I was told that Disney cultivates ideas from within only and that my idea was not in any way going to be accepted or adopted by Disney in any form.

All I wanted was to be able to bring my Chihuahuas with me. I don't mind spending money to board my doggies, but it would be nice to board them with Disney instead of at a strange place. Deuce has epilepsy, so knowing that he would be close enough by to check in on would be really nice.

I did hear someone on another board mention taking a survey on the idea of making the kennels into a pet resort type experience. I guess they might give it a go. I would much rather board my doggies close by.

I know a lot of people would bring their darling pets to enjoy the magic at WDW. We would feel more at peace knowing they ( 2 cockers) would be taken care as good as our own vets. We will be housing them with our vet for our upcoming October adventure, he just recently built a new facility to house more pets. I hope they like it. That would be great...not just for dogs but for kitties too.

We have a place here that does only boarding and grooming...that is where our spoiled animals stay....they suffer with playtime....snuggles....you know how it goes...

Letters are screened when they come in, anything with "creative content" is basically returned unread past the screeners, who hold the content of the letters confidential.

That way...you can't sue disney for the idea of a pet resort, as nobody past one person read that letter, and that one person has to hold the content confidential.

If we weren't sue happy, I'm sure it wouldn't be like that, but this is the same reason it says "HOT" 20 times in large letters on McDonalds cups now, because who woulda thunk coffee was hot?

The tone of their response was harsh and to me....nasty. I could care less about suing anyone. Heck, I have a knee that cost me $16,000 worth of a repair bill that was injured on an airplane. It was nothing that the airline did wrong. Yeah, there were cookie crumbs and pieces on my seat and yeah, they shouldn't have been left there and yeah, I could have asked to have the flight attendance clean the seat, but I chose to clean the seat. In choosing to clean the seat, I twisted my knee and tore my ACL. Was this their fault, God NO! I spent hours on the phone telling their lawyers that I would not sue. I spent even more hours telling my insurance that it was not the airlines fault. It was a huge mess.

I think that if anything, it would be an honor to give Disney an idea that could improve the experience they offer. The only compensation that I would want would be the improved experience. I guess I am the rare bird in today's world.

You are one of the few, although if they developed and built your concept as you suggested in your letter, you would deserve to be paid for your great idea. If Disney offered you money to use it, would you turn them down? I highly doubt it.

I'm sure that the Disney Company gets thousands of suggestions from guests and people outside of the company who are offering their suggestions on new rides and resources for the park, and many people, who do not plan on suing in the beginning, only to be paid a fair price for their concepts, do expect to be paid for there original ideas if they are used. People pitch ideas all the time in the business world and are paid for those ideas and there is nothing wrong with the practice.

It reminds me of the case where 2 men pitched the idea for Disney's Wide World of Sports to a Disney executive while casually sitting in a bar. The exectutive said that he had no interest and then a few years later, lo and behold, Disney builds the concept that the men had suggested. Well those men, who pitched the idea owned the concept and deserved to be paid for their imaginative ideas. Unfortunately, the men had to drag Disney to court to force Disney to make good on the concept and pay the men the money they deserved.

That kind of a lawsuit has nothing to do with someone suing for an accident that occured due to their own negligence.
