Disney keeps finding ways to screw us campers

If you want to go to Disney over the holidays, there are other ways to do it that could save you money. There are other campgrounds that cost less so then you could afford Disney admission. Check Tropical Palms, KOA, or one of the state parks. We've stayed at the Contemporary and we've gone the other extreme and taken a timeshare tour to get a cheap week in a 2 bedroom condo, and both were great. Just make the best with what you have! We are currently trying to plan a trip for 5 on a tight budget, so it's either camping in December at the Fort or doing a timeshare ($404 for 2 bedrm for a Wk). We have stayed on site doing freebies and skipped the parks, too. We would stay off site to be able to afford Disney admission. At over $100/nt for a campsite, if you are driving a camper/RV, you might do better driving your car and staying in a value resort and booking the free dining or staying in an offsite hotel, depending how many people are in your family. I'm just throwing out other possibilities, but if you are like us, the only cheaper options are camping elsewhere, in tents, or the timeshare. Good luck!

I know what you mean. It's also the quality of what they're offering. Sort of off topic, but we were there just a few weeks ago and went to eat at one of our favourite spots in MK - Pinocchio Haus - and they had changed from the regular pizza to some flatbread pizza. The wife absolutely hated it, so I took it back and asked them to trade it for a salad. I even tried some and it was terrible! We LOVE Pizza Planet pizza, and if they ever change that to this flatbread crap, I don't know what we'll do then!

The other thing that bugs me with the Fort is that it's getting harder and harder to find a working pay telephone at the comfort stations. We were in the 1600's and the CS that was closest to us didn't have a working phone. The next closest had 1 working and 1 not. Every time I come down I call the front and report the phones as not working, but it doesn't seem to matter - nothing gets fixed. Maybe next time I'll start asking for an extra discount if the phones aren't working. Never know - if you put up enough stink it might work!

Payphones? they still have those? I like the higher prices, it keeps the riff raff out:beach:

Riff raff? Not everyone has or needs a cell phone. I get along quite fine without one. Only costs me 4 cents per minute to call anywhere on a payphone and I don't even need a quarter. Considering the high prices that we do pay at FW, I'm disappointed that so many of the phones are always out of order.

I thought everyone in the Fort is considered riff-raff. Isn't that why we bring most of what we need and sit around in folding lawn chairs instead of lounging on the balcony of some upscale resort? :hippie: We have a GD who is proud to wear her t-shirt that says "Trailer Trash Princess in Training". :rotfl2:

Sorry, we don't camp to be considered *trailer trash* or *riff raff*. No offences intended. We also don't have time usually to sit around the campsite, especially at FW. We have camped for 44 years because we thoroughly enjoy the way of life *on the road* and at our destinations. Also, FW is the last place that would encourage riff-raff, so don't consider that an issue there at all ( just the site prices almost equal value hotel). We love our MH away from home. ;)

Ditto!

I kinda like to have fun some times with this whole "trailer trash" thing. :cool1:

I agree with all of you that we choose camping as a lifestyle and we love our choice. But sometimes it is fun to drift over to the Resorts DIS Board and read the comments from people who opine about those "poor" folks at Fort Wilderness.

I think to myself, "yes, (i wish someone would) throw me into that briar patch". :lmao:

I kinda feel sorry for them. I'm sure they are good people who simply don't know any better. :confused3

Yeah, I was lurking over there recently and read about bedbugs at the Swan.

Before that (on another thread) I read about fanatical room deodorizing, getting creeped out thinking about whose been in the bed before them and allergic asthmatic complaints in response to the room sprayers.

I'm snug as a.bug when I camp in my own personal tented room on my own bed, pillows and sheets. :-)

It IS getting really expensive to stay at the Fort. Both our trips this year are in the value resorts as it was cheaper than extra gas & a campsite. It's too bad because our trip coming up in a few weeks would be a really beautiful time of year to be camping.

I'll just have to bring my Mickey post lamp and set it up outside our hotel room door. I'll let you know how that works out. :rolleyes1

I come from the other side, with 7 people are in our family, camping is still cheaper than a deluxe or two rooms.

:thumbsup2 also agree with Kristina! Never have to worry about other people's germs, bugs, dirt, whatever. Also have my own comfortable bed, private bathroom, kitchen. Let anyone laugh, would not trade places for any of the expensive hotels on property ;) Anyway, anyone can eat at all the hotels, or basically do anything you want to do except sleep in an expensive room that looks no better than mine.

Campers Unite! :woohoo:

One year we were staying at the fort close to Christmas and one evening we were taking the bus from the front to our loop. Well, a bunch of people from other hotels got on the bus to go down to the hoop de do. I heard ooh's and ah's over the decorations and then, from somewhere in the back, I hear, "Holy crap! Look at these things. These people must have more money than God!"

Another person who thought campers were all po' folks got hit by the enlightenment stick.

LOL It's not a cheap hobby unless you're roughin' it.
