Disney is building a hotel in Washington D.C.

Just heard on the news that Disney has purchased 15 acres on the National Harbor to build a 550 room hotel. Don't know if it is DVC or what. I'm sure someone can find some more info. I've got to hit the road.

Cool! I saw on the CNBC ticker that Disney will begin selling theme park merchandise online. Nothing about a DC hotel though.

If/When this starts going up I'll take some pictures. I work just on the otherside of the river from National Harbor and go over there regularly.

Did anyone notice that this project had DVC written all over it, but yet, NOT ONE WORD ABOUT DVC.

It seems like in mentioning ABD, Disney Cruise Line, ABC & ESPN, etc. that DVC would have come up. JMHO

The articles continuously calls this a hotel project. Hmmm. The bright spot is that they did not come out and say it would not have a DVC component.

I would love to have a DVC stay in Washington D.C.

This would work great for us too! My MIL is in Harrisonburg, Va and we usually end up flying into Dulles, National, or BWI.

Makes sense to me also that it would have at least a DVC component. And would make a perfect base (as the article stated) for Adventures trips. Yes, the article refers to a hotel project, but Disney people quoted "but it will be a project of significant scale and put a recognizable Disney footprint in the Washington area," and used the terms "resort hotel" and seems natural (IMHO) they would blend it with DVC like Hawaii.

The local news is continually comparing the National Harbor development (which is technically in Maryland, not Washington DC) to the Hawaii development, which is DVC.

It'd be the one DVC where I know I'll never stay, because I live here.

Well, technically, the Hawaii development is a combination DVC/hotel. My money is on this project being the same, even though they are not saying DVC yet.

Although I also live here, I would like to stay there, at least once or twice as a pp mentioned, for the fireworks!

Not gonna spend points to stay at home - I've seen the fireworks in DC. Been living here most of my life. They'll never do better than 1976.

Combo DVC/hotel is probably the way it's going to go. Right now downtown DC is really slammed with tourists, can understand why Disney wants to get in on it.

Funny, we lived in Reston in 1976 and we tried to get to DC, but ended up stopped on the Woodrow Wilson bridge watching the fireworks... Still a great vantage point and indeed the best fireworks ever.

I am not sure about this being DVC or even partly so. Not sure how many people would want make their home there. I'm more inclined to think tourist destination and just a plain old Disney hotel. JMHO. Who knows though...

We took a cruise on the Spirit of Washington about ten years ago .... You would not believe all the dead fish we saw in the Potomac. I will stick with taking a day bus tour to the Mall area.

I honestly do not see anything 'there' - it's the patch of land centered in the middle with a couple trees that haven't been cleared: (i.e., it's not even directly 'on' the waterfront)
It's 8 miles south of main DC [which, i'd rather stay near the national mall and smithsonian area]
and DC does not ring Disney to me at all...
I think, big mistake.

I was born in 1976, I sort of missed those fireworks by a few months. I mentioned in another thread that I could see our family doing yearly 4th of July trips, DVC or not, if this is done right. I grew up taking summer trips to our place in Fenwick Island, DE and I loved that so much but I feel like I would also love this for our family - Maybe it's just enticing because it has the Disney Brand on it and we'd really be better suited to buy a week July 4th in OC where I "grew up" even if it isn't Disney branded.

I think the National Harbor resort area is well designed and very resort like. Take a look at the National Harbor web site: http://nationalharbor.com/consumer/home.htm The Gaylord National is definitely waterfront. There is a water taxi that takes you to the national landmarks and it is not far from places like Mount Vernon. We are looking forward to the development and if it is DVC we will own a few points to vacation just a few miles down the street from my home LOL (23 to be exact).

I have attempted to get a good rate at the Gaylord National is it is difficult to even find a vacant night.
