Disney Insurance Question

We do not want to risk losing our fully paid 10 night Disney resort money. So, we took the Disney insurance (was cheaper than what I found on insuremytrip.com). Our question is about "pre-existing conditions".

The way I read the online policy is that the insurance will pay for a pre-existing condition if we buy the insurance before or at the time of final payment, and we are reasonably medically able to travel at the time.

However, when I checked with the rep as making our final payment, she said pre-existing conditions will not be covered if we are taking medications for such......?

Any thoughts or experience on this?

can you post the language in the policy or a link to the policy?

Thanks for your interest in helping me. Here's a statement on the policy's cover page:

PRE-EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITION EXCLUSION WAIVER
If insurance is purchased by final Trip payment (I did that), the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion will be waived. This is applicable to all coverages contained in the policy. The Insured must be medically able to travel when you pay your premium (we both are). In the event a claim is filed, the Injury or illness must be substantiated to our Claims Department.

Here's a statement inside the policy pages:

PRE-EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITION EXCLUSION APPLICABLE TO ALL COVERAGES - The Insurer will not pay for loss or expense as the result of Injury, Sickness or other condition (excluding any condition from which
death ensues) of the Insured, a Traveling Companion, or an
Immediate Family Member of the Insured or Traveling Companion
booked to travel with the Insured, which, within the 60 day period
before the Insured's coverage began: (a) first manifested itself,
worsened, became acute, or had symptoms which would have
prompted a reasonable person to seek diagnosis, care or
treatment; (b) required taking prescribed drugs or medicine,
unless the condition for which the prescribed drug or medicine is
taken remains controlled without any change in the required
prescription; or (c) required treatment by a Physician or treatment
had been recommended by a Physician.

What I got from the policy info above & before calling Disney & purchasing this policy is that my husband's pre-existing medical condtions will be covered & the pre-existing exclusion waived because:
1. Purchased the policy at final payment time.
2. Medically able to travel - no disabilities at all. He just takes continuing meds for his triple bypass in 2005 (clogged arteries) & heart stent in 2006 (2 of the 3 "new" arteries collapsed), but luckily, he did not have a heart attack, so has no negative physical residuals from the surgeries.

However, the Disney rep said pre-existing conditions are not covered if taking meds for such. I realize she is not an insurance policy trained person. I just wondered if anyone here has filed claims & what has resulted.

We don't buy insurance when traveling in the US because our Medicare covers us. However, prior to this, we have not had to pay so much non-refundable costs as required by Disney for their resorts.

Anyone know if Disney will apply the cost to a future stay if a trip has to be cancelled due to a serious issue - even tho their written 'rules' say otherwise? I know from experience that airlines do - even on a nonrefundable ticket. We were scheduled to fly to Vegas when hubby ended up in the hospital for the bypass. Our ticket was bargain rate, nonrefundable, but Delta applied it to future travel (w/i 1 year) without any medical documentation - just did it over that phone call & sent me vouchers, & didn't charge any fees!

We had to use the travel insurance once, when my husband's pre-existing medical condition suddenly worsened. They gave us no trouble at all. They would be pretty likely to loose such a denial in court, after all, and do they really want a denial of coverage lawsuit? In most states, their exposure is for treble damages plus fees. (Sometimes the legal system works to head off bad behavior after all).

It sounds like it will only cover you if at the time of purchase you are able to travel despite the condition, but at the time of travel if there is a change that prevents travel.

This might be like having high blood pressure, but the morning of a flight having a heart attack due to the high blood pressure.

Hello, hope this helps.

The key phrase in the fine print is "which, within the 60 day period before the Insured's coverage began". This is usually meant to apply to people who did not have continuous coverage with their own health insurance.

The insurance carrier will be able to tell you if they can classify any medical condition as pre-existing if you and your husband have had continuous coverage. 1.800.826.3899

I've worked in health care for a long time and believe the answer you should hear is no.
