I booked my disney vacation about 3 months ago and put down my deposit. My husband may be leaving for Iraq in Sept but we wont know til almost the end of aug. Our trip is in december so it is possible we will have to cancel our vacation. I want to pay more money towards our trip but does anyone know how that works if we need to cancel it? Will we get our money back if we cancel it by sept and our trip isnt til december :confused3 Please help.

The rules for cancellations are different for room only reservations and for packages. If you have a room only reservation you can cancel up to 6 days out and get your money back. If you have a package and cancel up to 45 days out then you get your money back. With a package once you are within the 45 days the rules change for how much you get back and I am not sure how it works since I never get a package.
Hope it all works out for you.

Do be aware that if you booked a pkg with trip insurance that you will get your money back less the insurance amount. The trip insurance is not refundable.

I believe between 45 days and 6 days out you take a penalty of $100 and within $6 days its $200. I never get the insuranace. The cost of the insurance is more than the $100 penalty that I would lose between 45 days out and 6 days out.

If I have to cancel within 6 days of my trip, there must be something big going on, and I don't think I would be too concerned about losing my deposit.

If its a package, all you lose at most is your deposit. If you get the insurance it's like losing that money regardless of whether you go or not. I never get the insurance. I'd rather pocket that $100 or so dollars and take my chances.

Also, read your insurance carefully - not everything and anything is covered.

Hope you get to go and don't have to cancel - GOOD LUCK!

I get the insurance ...but with 2 sets of parents in not the greatest health and travelling during hurricaine season, I would rather be safe then sorry. But I agree most of the time it is not worth it.

You may still be able to buy trip insurance for the trip even though you have already booked it. If you search the web you will find severeal sites that will still sell you insurance now for a December trip. However, you need to be careful that it will cover military deployments. I was looking to insure a Disney cruise last year and looked at several policies that specifically excluded deployments.

Until I read this, it never occurred to me that you would need trip insurance for a possible military deployment. I always think of bad weather, poor health or an accident as the reasons to have to cancel a trip. My ignorance shows just how lucky I have been, as no one in my family has ever been in this position. I know that this is off-topic, but I just wanted to thank all of you who have made such sacrifices, and to let you know that it's appreciated.

By the way, I think it's awful that there is insurance that does not cover military deployments. I guess you have to be very careful about reading the fine print.

Okay so if i am understanding this i may still be able to get insurance. But if i cancel within 45 days of my trip i will get our money back so why would i need the insurance? His unit if def. going and he is unactive right now so they havent decided if he is going or not. But we will know by sept because they leave for training. So if we find out he is leaving we can cancel by sept
1st so will we still get all of our money back or do i need insurance to get it all back. Im sorry im so confused hah

If you cancel more than 45 days before your trip date, you get 100% back. Sept 1 is definitely more than 45 days before your December trip - you will get back whatever you've paid.

Sorry you might have to cancel for this reason. If he does go, you can spend your days planning his Welcome Home trip -- that's what I did! :) My husband got called in April 2006, left 10 days later, was in stateside training through July, deployed 8/1/06 and was home in July 2007. We went to Disney in Sept! :) The DIS gave me something to do while he was gone! Good luck to you!

Confusing isn't it? You can add the insurance on if you haven't paid in full.(if you are going) If you think you are going to cancel don't add the insurance. If you cancel within the 45 days mark & it is a package you get all your money back except the insurance unless you don't have it on there. If you will be canceling Sept 1st you will get all back on how you paid on it. Hope this helps. Tell your DH thanks !

thanks you all so much for helping me understand all of this. We are actually going as a whole family my parents his parents our brothers and sisters so everyone asked me to find out.

Thank you for everyones response about my husband we are very proud of him. Claire&TheBoys tell your husband thanks so much for serving us and thank you because i can only imagine how hard it is. My husband left for 3 months a week after i had my son to help with hurrican katrina and thats the longest we have been apart. I have already had a few memebers of our family already go over to Iraq and 1 that never got to come home. I try to stay postivie for my husband but it is extremly hard thinking he'll leave me and our 2 year old son for soo long. But if he does go i already am planning a very long vacation for his return. thanks for everyones response.
