I don't know if teens would admit to it being awesome, but it is a really fun game, so teens would probably get sucked in even if they wouldn't want to admit it! If a kid is used to playing more intense/violent games, he may not love Disney Infinity. Remember if you are giving this as a gift to someone who is not your own kid: it is the gift that keeps taking - there is too much neat stuff to buy as add-ons, and you can't even play 2 player in the worlds without 2 characters from the same movie, which are not included in the starter packs. Expect another $13-$25+ purchase just to be able to play 2 player.

With just the starter pack, 2 kids can play in the "toybox" where they can design their own world, but it's a split screen [each kid does his own thing.]
2 kids can only play in a "playset" together if they use 2 characters from that playset's movie - so to play in Monsters U they will have Sully from the starter pack and you need to purchase Randall, Mike, etc. separately.
I believe wii does not support 2-player, so if you purchased a starter pack for wii, buying extra characters is not necessary (kids might disagree!
I just gave this to my boy/girl twins for their 8th birthday last night. Along with the starter pack, I got them the "Sidekicks" play set and the "Villains" play set. Either one of those will be good to get started for two players. There's a $5 coupon for any $29 set at Target.
The thing with Skylanders is that each figure does its own stuff in the game; even the variations on the same character. So you can play with the starter kit, but kids will want to add to their collection [some kids swap figures but as everyone has the figures in the starter kit, they'd need additional figures to have a trading advantage.] There are also more full games you can purchase. There are always deals on the figures; I never let DS spend more than $10 on 1.

BI [Before Infinity], DS used to spend every dime he had on Skylanders figures. Now he just waits for DH to come home with the new Infinity stuff

I am a little concerned about this as well. My son loved Skylanders, but he beat it really fast and once you do, there isn't much else to do and he was quickly bored with it. Then we got Giants.. same thing. He beat it in no time at all and then it was barely touched again. He is 9 by the way.
He's been very interested in Infinity. We have a big trip coming up in a few weeks and the kids know they aren't getting much for Christmas because the trip is their gift. So I had a limited budget for him and poured all of his into Infinity and the characters. I think he'll love it, but I worry he'll whip through it like Skylanders and that will be it. We do limit video game time which stretches out the longevity of whatever game he is playing. But with Infinity he'll be on Christmas break and have more time to play.
My husband (who is a big gamer) says that because Infinity has the Toy Box mode it's worth it for that alone. He'll still get hours of game play out of it long after he's done the actual levels in the game.
I tend to trust my husband on this one because he's the one who plays these games with ds. Though I have to admit, I can't wait to get my hands on Infinity.
My 5 year old and almost 12 yr old love it! We bought it the day it came out and they have been obsessed with trying to collect all of the figures and opening the new portions of the game. They both asked for the new sets that have come out recently for xmas.
