My kids participated in academic games which took them out of school during the day for a several days a month during the school year and then again for a week in the spring for the national competition (sometimes at Orlandowhere they usually had a day @ Universal or Disney) without any issue at all.

School sanctioned events like that are excused absences and they take attendance at them.

Q-Man's points are all good. Except there are cheap flights to Caribbean resort towns like Cancun from Texas--not just Gulf of Mexico resorts.

Last I looked at a map, with Cancun being located at the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, the GoM is on the north side of Cancun and the Caribbean is on the south. But, yes I was generalizing a bit as Dallas to Cabo is the same distance as Dallas to Cancun and Cabo is only 10% farther from Houston than Cancun is.

hmm texas Might pass the Gambling in texas bill soon and have casinos everyone knows texas loves to be this old fashioned state that likes to keep everything BAsic for Decades but now things might change maybe soon in the future it will be secret property owned by disney or some billionaire example the houston theme park ideas as Grand Texas theme park and the earth quest adventures both ideas or are were post to debut in 2017 idk whats going on are what secret franchise is going under it but Texas as a state needs to shake things up all we have is Mostly old fashioned stuff and six flags and sea world to but soon things in texas might change soon it might be the next tour site like Las vegas , California, Oklahoma and Florida one day day but right now im not sure If even Disney would wanna purchase any land in texas same with vegas casinos if and only if the gambling bill is to pass ...

1. Texas House speaker's family owns Retama Park racetrack outside San Antonio. He's going to push gambling next session. Also, two Indian tribes, Choctaw and Alabama-Coushatta, are pouring PAC money into incumbent accounts.

I suspect gambling to pass next session.

2. Re Disney cruise poss leaving Galveston. Not relevant. The port of Galveston isn't going anywhere and IF Disney decides to build in Texas, it'll be five years before ships would need to come back. The timeline for cruise/park combos is far enough out to make current moves irrelevant.

3. FP+ is designed to manage crowds that are outgrowing the parks. In a short period of time, a new MK won't be about cannabalization but instead, a necessary crowd relief tool to accomodate growth. If Disney is looking further down the road than FP+ to manage MK crowds, a third MK park should be in the planning stages.

4. Start with two parks, MK and Marvel, place them in the Houston area, and there is enough to do to get Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin guests to stay over.

5. DVC at DisTex and Galveston to handle cruise traffic accommodations, and the money will start pouring in.

I don't think Marvel alone could be an entire park. But if they went the avenue of a New Hollywood Studios and included multiple Star Wars and Pixar elements in addition to Marvel, they'd have an unbeatable combination that would warrant choosing Texas over WDW and DLR.

That's the thing. They dont want people choosing a third location over Florida.

Which is why any third location if ever done would essentially be another Disney theme park staple--(a Magic Kingdom/Disneyland Park clone) --or a substantial clone with some different wrinkles here and there to make it a little different from the other two Magic Kingdom/Disneyland parks in the US.

I think any completely new park concept for the US such as Animal Kingdom, Disney Studios etc. once were will be reserved for the Florida property. That is why they have all the Florida property in the first place.

Caveat here. I do know Disney did plan a third resort location anchored by the Disney America theme park rather than build that new park concept on the Florida property. I personally thought a stand alone resort anchored by essentially a Magic Kingdom or Epcot sized version of the Epcot American pavillion sounded like a mistake that would be pretty boring and that they would quickly find they would need to build a Magic Kingdom/Disneyland park clone on the property as a companion park as well to draw people and rescue it--which would really have pissed of the Virginians.

Again as I said a year ago. I bet if there are any plans for this, it will be just a regional weekend resort consisting of at the most the above mentioned MK/Disneyland park clone with a resort hotel and a Downtown Disney and maybe a water park clone as well and is probably a decade or two away from the demographics to make economic sense for hard planning for such a project. I do think Texas makes the most geographic and demographic sense for something like this. Sidenote I doubt they would want it to be urbanized like the Disneyland resort and the Tokyo resort, so they might hypothetically purchase a 1000 acres or a little more just for all sorts of green space but wouldnt mean it would ever be developed.

yes you are correct and since Houston hasn't had any Theme parks Since 2005 its been billionaires wanting to Build 2 parks Grand Texas Theme Park at New caney and Earth Quest Adventures in another part in Houston same with the Texas gambling law as Texas in a whole they want tourist and they want profit so they are planning to try and get the new Laws past cause Texas are tired of Texans in a whole going to Vegas , Florida , Oklahoma Mexico and Louisiana I really need to research more on this ... but do anybody think Disney could have a 3rd property due to Rumors of Disney has acre of land somewhere not sure in Texas ?

As for the Virginia suggestion, the idea was to put up a history park near manassas but the outcry over the 'historical' land being desecrated by a crass amusement park put the stops to that idea...now the parcel houses a shopping center, among other development.

file this under I want to be an imaginer:

All the tour groups clogging up WDW would indicate that South/Central America (even southern Mexico south of Mexican Riveria/Costa Maya) could support a park if the infrastructure could be developed. Heck, they could buy an island and put a mini park on it and cruise to it, dropping off guests for several days/taking them back to mainland as a split stay sort of trip.

We have 2 major interstates (I85 and I65) in Montgomery, with I10, I59 and I20 nearby. We have warm weather, and flat affordable land. We are 3 hours from the Gulf coast, and have lots of travelers from the Midwest who come through here to go to the beach and to Walt Disney World.

Yes, building a park here would take visitors from Orlando, but would certainly solve many of your capacity problems.

My husband and I would certainly purchase discounted Annual Passes.

Not kind of midway. It is midway. Whether you go through Texas on I-10 or I-20, with a direct drive from DLR to WDW, the midway point is somewhere in Texas.

If they did build a park in Texas, I wonder how they'd handle the characters when the temps hit 100° for several days in a row. Or when it hits 105-110°.

Yup we are right smack dab in the middle. Having a Disney park or resort within a decent driving range would be AWESOME! We have to fly to get to both and it takes up so much of our vacation budget being a family of four. I could not image being able to just hop in the car and go to Disney....that would be amazing!!! All we have is Six Flags and they are not classy. We have made the drive to WDW before just to try and I hope it never comes to that again lol what a long drive! It does not even have to be a Disney theme park. I would settle for any type of resort by Disney, even like Vero Beach or something. We just need a nice Disney place to get our Disney fix. We do not even have the Disney Cruises porting out of Galveston anymore. There is not Disney anything close to us and it makes me sad...

Back in the late 80's before MGM and AK, there was talk of building a frontier park in Texas, and an American heritage park in the Virginia area. When Universal announced opening a park in Orlando, those plans were scrapped to build MGM, Pleasure Island, and a host of resorts to do battle with Universal. This is the first time I have heard of anything in those areas again, and I do not see it in any other Disney site, so I am guessing it not a park

As for wrong side of history, its according to how you look at it.

I dare say Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. (who both lived in Montgomery) would be able to proudly say that they were on the right side of history.

I'm pretty sure that Universal's business is primarily regional. It is a regional resort( similar to Disneyland Resort in California) in fact that draws some of Disney's national and international business over to it during their stay at Disney. Even though they advertise nationally like Disney does I'm not sure how much of their business is national draw just to go to Universal.

I say this to say I don't know if Universal would strike first at a third location or not. I do think if either Disney or Universal did a third location, the other would probably soon strike nearby (not necessarily within 10 miles of each other such as in Florida) but the same area based on the model of the past where they almost look like they are playing chess with each other--including even internationally to some degree such as in Japan.

In my opinion, putting another Disney park or resort anywhere in North America is unlikely.

If you went Disneyland-sized, you wouldn't get the long-distance draw. The park would mostly benefit locals only, and beyond a curiosity bump by Disney park fans wouldn't get much beyond that. A limited number of things to do with the travel expense and limited vacation time just wouldn't make it worthwhile.

If they went big - another WDW-type - all they'd likely do is cannibalize the tourists from WDW. They'd perhaps get more locals who otherwise wouldn't have gone to WDW, but as a resort destination people would choose between WDW and the new resort...and then it might depend on how big it is - would you start with just two parks? Would that occupy a family's entire vacation? Or would they still choose WDW for more choices? Can you build an even bigger resort to start at huge expense? How soon could you start seeing returns on it?

They've still got room in Florida. They'd likely have to exhaust that long before they'd consider another location in North America.
