Went to DW in Nov 4 yrs. ago, and took took our then 5th and 8th graders out of school for a week. Went mid Nov and it was great-no crowds at all. We are going again Nov 2010. Struggling with pulling the boys out of school-one will be a freshman, one a senior. This trip might have to be shorter than the last one as my soon-to-be senior doesn't like the idea of missing a whole week of school. He has a big class load scheduled for next year. Any Suggestions?

We've pulled our kids out of school the week of Veteran's Day, which is always a holiday on Nov 11, so whatever day that falls that day is a holiday, and looking at our districts calendar next year, it's on a Thurs. and they added Friday as a holiday, making it possible to take the week off and only missing 3 days.
I booked earlier than seeing that calendar and decided to just go Thanksgiving week, since they have the whole week off.
So maybe those are a couple choices.

People have very strong views about pulling students out of school. You should receive a wide variety of answers.

Up until 8th grade, if you have an A student who rarely if ever misses school, I have no problem missing a week of elementary or even junior high.

After that a firm no. Either you have a high school student who is:
- Above average. Taking college level courses. Imagine missing a week of college. Not good.
- A B/C student who works hard to keep up with a regular class schedule. Nope, won't be able to catch back up.
- A C/D student, who is struggling. They may actually fail a class due to missing school, not understanding a new concept...

At this age you have to take them when school is out. I would not even suggest missing a day of high school.

We've taken DD out of school on numerous occasions to go to WDW. This past Sept was the last time. She's now in the 10th grade and her work load is daunting to say the least. DD did a lot of homework during our down time at the resort and it still wasn't enough. The missed classroom lectures and class work pulled her grade down to a C and she found it very hard to catch back up. We'll be going back this next Sept, but she's decided not to do that to herself again. She'll be staying with family instead, which was her decision.

It all depends on your kids. Do they know that any work they miss they will have to make up? Are they prepared to miss a week's worth of notes and tests? As long as they know what they are missing and what they will have to make up, then you should be fine.
