Hello, all!

My husband and I are trying to decide if we'll book our Rome excursion trough Disney or on our own through Rome in Limo.

We're looking at the "Best of Rome" for adults only but the price is pretty steep ($359 per adult). Has anyone taken this excursion? What makes it worth over 3x the price of the comparable "Imperial & Renaissance Rome"?

For Rome in Limo, is our driver also a tour guide? Will they escort us through the Colosseum and Vatican or do I need to hire a separate guide? How much should I tip them on a 500 EUR trip? Should I buy tickets for attractions in advance or when we get there?

Thanks in advance!!

We did our excursion through Disney as it was our first time in Europe and didn't want to chance anything. But if we ever went back, having booked many excursions on our own since in other ports, we would book the excursions on our own. The ship's prices will always be double or triple what you can get on your own.

Did not do any DCL excursions on our trip to Italy. We did everything on our own.

For Rome we had decided that we would do the Vatican on our port day, so we arranged a walking tour for St. Peters and the Museum. We walked to the train station in Civitavecchia (less than 10 minutes) and for about 10 euros per person got round trip train and all day metro/bus pass. That being said, I know that we could not have done the Vatican, Colosseum and the Roman Forum on our own in one port day. Since you are looking for a "highlights" tour, I think going with Rome in Limo is a good option.

Like someone on your other thread said - get the Rick Steves books to determine what is you want to do, then figure out how to accomplish it.

Note on Florence: you might want to find a tour operator that can drive you from the port and take you to the places in Florence you want to visit, if you choose to go there.

We did the best of Rome tour, love it, it was a very intense tour. We got to the port just in time to the departure. The only thing I didn't like was the lunch was between an hour and a half or two hours. Not enough time to buy souvenirs.

We used Rome in limo and loved them. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers. Our experience was fantastic and we would use them again happily. The driver was not like a traditional tour guide but it was like a family member had picked us up and was showing off their city. We were met at the port and got in an air conditioned car that was clean and very comfortable. He then started his chats telling us proudly about his country and his city. It was the personal interaction that made it so special. He explained things like only a native could, about traffic, food, how people live in the city. We saw and experienced so much and had great interaction with them before the cruise in the planning stage. As it was only our family we could make changes to the day as we were enjoying it. We paid extra for a tour guide of the Vatican and they were very knowledgeable. We did not get a tour guide for the colosseum but had a headset and walked around ourselves. Rome in limo dropped us off and met us at the end, which we liked.
