Disney in August- HOT ??

Hi,

In-laws coming and booked a week at SSR 1st week of august. I've been there usually dec, and spring. Everyone is warning me that it's gonna be really hot. Just exactly how hot is it and is it humid? Friends are telling me that i'm crazy-it'll be 100 degrees. So I worry, i'm not a big fan of HEAT

If your not a big heat fan then I wouldn't want to be in disney in august. ITS HOOOOOT and Very sticky. We were there in august for our honeymoon a couple of years ago. And WOW was it warm.

Yes, it's HOT and HUMID..your friends are right.

Because of work commitments, we're only able at this time to go in August.
Last year it was over 100 several days and there is a way to hit the parks and have it be enjoyable and bearable. We hit the parks early and left when the "crazy" people were pushing/pulling their children into the parks around 12ish, and headed back to our resort. My DH camped out under his favorite tree to read and I hit the pool. We had early ADRs and as people were leaving the parks to eat we were headed back in to enjoy concerts, rides and shows. We must be crazy because we're going back this summer, same time WITH 8 more people...there you go, heat and more family<G>

We went last August on a quick trip to use up some free airline tickets we had. I've never felt hot like that (and I did grow up in inner-city Baltimore...so not a cool place). You started sweating the minute you opened your door and didn't stop until you landed in the pool (which felt like bath water....but still a welcomed relief). Take misters, go to the parks very early (although it will still be hot then...but not as bad as it will be later), and pick attractions that are indoors and air conditioned!

We've had 2 "end of August" WDW vacations. The first wasn't bad so we tried another, and that one, well, it was HOT! We decided not to go again at the end of August.

I was there in mid-June a few years back, and it was intolerable. 100's, and humidity in the high 90's. I've been there in September and hit the same conditions. I can't imagine how bad it must be in August.

I didn't know what 'hot' really meant until we had to leave Typhoon Lagoon on that June trip because it was too hot to lay on the lounge chairs. Even though we had towels on them, the metal was very uncomfortably hot.

We went the last week of Sept. and I thought I would die. Then like an idiot we went last week of Aug. for free dining. It was unbelievable - the heat was too much. My DS7 was miserable and it made me even more!!! Never again!!! We did have spray bottles, but that only helped a little. Try to go early and then go to the pool or someplace to try and cool off.

We went last August and it sure was hot and humid with temps in the upper 80's and low 90's. Someone once described the humidity in Florida in August as being "poisonous". Well, it won't kill ya but it sure is deadly hot in August. All that being said, we are going back again this August. We live in Upstate NY now, but after living in Las Vegas for 6 years a little heat is not going to stop us from going on vacation!

We have a trip plan for the first week of August this year and it's going to be a water park/pool week, we're not even going to try to go to the theme parks because of the heat. Hopefully we'll be able to handle the water parks in the heat.

We went last August and are going again this year in August. Yes, its HOT, but like others have said its manageable by heading out early and avoiding the parks in the heat of the mid-day. I just expect that I'm going to be hot and sweaty all day! I think a lot of it also depends on where you are from and your tolerance for heat and humidity. We're from NC and when we were in FL last August, it was cooler there than it was at home. So, I just pull up my hair, put on a tank top, and go enjoy.

Like everyone has said, it's hot. But what bothered me was the lightening. They cancelled Fantasmic one night (that I know of) due to lightening and closed the pool 3 times during the afternoon due to lightening. One of the lifeguards told us Disney does a very good job of monitoring lightening and when it comes within "x" amount of miles, they shut down the pools. Safety First!

Given all that, we're going again this August. Kids are in high school, missing school isn't an option anymore. So we just slow down a bit, drink more water -doubling the cost of the trip- and just enjoy. I'd rather be hot in disney than hot at home.

Problem??? 90+ degrees and 100% humidity, that's normal for August.

My question is how do you guys put up with 10 below and 2 feet of snow on the ground? DH has promised me that we will never move north of Tennessee.

Seriously, do be very careful in August. It is not uncommon to hear of h.s. football players or band members who got too hot in the Summer sun, had heat strokes, and died.

Drink plenty of liquids, don't over exert yourself, go inside during the hottest part of the day, and most importantly, if you suddenly feel cool or comfortable AND shouldn't be, i.e. you're still out in the sun, seek immediate medical attention. Also make sure to protect yourself from the sun with hats and sunscreen.

Be sensible, take precautions, and keep realistic expectations and you will be fine.

We have done end of August twice at WDW, and it was too hot to enjoy anything! And when it wasn't hot, it was raining!!!

We also vowed never to do August again.

As everyone already said, it's hot! Unfortunately, due to our school schedule I can only get to disney in the summer. We have been down late June (happened to be very hot then) and August, again very hot. We still had a blast, hit the parks early, spent the afternoon at the pool and stayed out later in the evenings. You learn to work around it unless you feel the need to cram everything into a week and go non-stop. Make sure you hit the waterparks!

I saw a dog chasing a cat and they were both walking. We like it though, have to admit we usually walk through the stores on main instead of on main-if that tells you anything.

Yes, we're the family wandering through the Orlando airport carrying down parkas because we needed them to walk from long-term parking to the terminal in Cleveland (and this year, we made it out on the last plane before they shut the airport down for three days--We were de-iced three times...but we made it to Mickey!)

Our next trip is planned for Aug '09. I am so worried about the heat- I have only done summer at wdw once- it was mid-June. The crowds were large and the heat - well- it was VERY intense. The crowds + the heat brought out the worst in some of the guests. I swore I would never go in the summer again. Never say never- right. When my kids were young, my opinion was that I would take them out of school 1 week- every other year for Disney. Well- here is reality- now that we have hit middle school- it is just too hard for my kids.

Now I am planning a nice long 10-12 night trip at the end of next Aug. We are definately doing morining and evenings in the parks- but no afternoons. We are going to take it slow and hope for the best. Any other tips on dealing with summer at WDW greatly appreciaited.
