Disney Housing VS. Apartment?

I am applying to the Spring 2012 program with my girlfriend and if we both get in we were considering getting an apartment of our own since it could be potentially cheaper than paying for two rooms at the disney apartments. Has anyone else done this before? What benefits do you lose out on? What activities do you miss if you don't live in the Disney apartments?

Honestly, it might not be that much cheaper to live in an apartment outside of Disney housing. Orlando rent is pretty expensive, plus you lose out on activities, the right to ride cp buses, and the community aspect of the college program. Not to mention all the hoops you have to jump through to get approved. Good luck!

Thank you! I've found some that after utilities it would be around the same for two people. Just like with the Disney places it would be atleast 640 a month for two people plus food and all that. We were just thinking it would be easier to have each other as a roommate since we know each other so well. But now finding a good apartment in a good neighborhood is proving to be a big challenge so Disney apartments here we come!

This may also be a good experience for you two ^_^ there are a lot of couple retreats where they live away from each other and only see each other during the day. It makes them cherish the time they have together more. This may be a relationship building trip for you!

I happened to pass by this so I had to respond!

Both are great!

My first program:
I did get the good experience of going to the welcome parties :goodvibes , I met a lot of friends that lived in my building. The floor below me and above. :) it was fun!

However, my second program:
I met my boyfriend, who lived at Patterson, and I lived at Chatham... I didn't talk to ANY of my building mates at all. and there were so many rules! Sometimes, I wouldn't even come home till 1:30 am. and I couldn't see my boyfriend this late. and I did NOT want to break any rules.

I know a lot of people have roommate problems as well. Guys can be very very messy. and keep in mind that your roommate may not like the fact that your girlfriend could be staying in your bed every night ;)

This is coming from my own personal experience. It could be different for you, of course lol

I think pretty much the only acception to non-Disney housing is for married couples or students with extreme extenuating circumstances. You can check but I'd just try to get in the same complex and maybe in the same building, they're all co-ed anyway! :)

Hi....my DD is applying for CP. We have a second home that is literally 10 minutes from Dis. University. Would she be allowed to live there...so we don't have to pay rent and a mortgage? If she does live there, would she be able to go to events at Chatham, etc.?

I'm not sure if she would be allowed to live away from the complexes. However, I know for sure that if she doesn't live in Chatham, she will not be allowed to participate in any events there. People living in one complex are not allowed to participate in another complexes events.

There aren't ever any complex specific events that excludes the cps in other housing. As long as it's a cp event, any of the cps are allowed in, as long as they paid the program fee at the beginning. Cps(in the housing) can come and go from each of the housing complexes from 7am-9pm from 9pm-1am they have to be signed in, and then no matter when you came in, you have to be gone by 1am.

I was a CP in 2008 and had an apartment in Kissimmee with my girlfriend (now wife). There was no "hoops" to jump through to get approval. I just told them I'd be living off site - no questions asked.

I did miss out on the CP events at Vista, etc but I gained an apartment that I didn't have to share with 5-7 other people. And the rent was about the same as what I would have had to spend on Disney CP housing.

Your DD can live at home, she just has to notify the program about her not living at one of the apartment complexes. As far her going to events, she might not be able to because all CP's staying in housing have housing ID's and they have to have them to get into events. She could have someone sign her into the complex for the events as a guest. There are also some events where CP's who do not live in the apt. pay a fee to attend (like formal or graduation).

If you live off site you should be able to attend all housing events. That being said, it often times requires jumping through hoops when you live off site. I have a friend who lives with her fiance off site and she had to sit at security for 5 mins just to go to the learning center at Vista way. All because she didn't have a housing ID even though she was taking a Disney class and had access to the learning center. Getting to classes is easy because they give you a piece of paper for that that you show security.

While it may be a pain in the rear end sometimes living off site I really wish I had chosen to live outside of CP apartments for my second program. For a 2 bedroom in chatham my roommates and I collectively pay a little more than 1,000 dollars a month. And what we get for that (gross carpets, ridiculous inspection expectations, rule out the rear) does not equal what you pay. I think the benefits of CP housing greatly depend on your age, level of maturity, and basically where you are at in your life.
