Disney holds on to things WAY to long

All she has is that tiny little castle on the other coast......

She has a big and very impressive castle in Paris. Complete with dragon.

And Disneyland already has CarsLand and Mickey's house- maybe it's worth a visit to the other coast. It's probably still got three hour lines right now though.

Then again, my kids adore Phineas and Ferb and are really pysched to do their Epcot experience. I am sure that in five years, that will probably be as dated as Kim Possible before them was.

And I think this is the biggest argument why 'current' stuff, especially stuff based on TV shows rather than movies, starts as something other than a permanent exhibit. Bring them in as characters, or part of a parade or show, or an interactive game that can easily be changed out. Wait 10 years and see if they really have staying power. If they do, then they are becoming "classics" and are more likely to eventually get their own attractions.

Which is as it should be. Nobody can tell today what is going to be considered a 'classic' 20 years from now.

Look at it this way...we already love attractions that are from classics; Pinnocchio, Snow White, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Tom Sawyer, Swiss Family, etc. That's what makes it fun for those of us that are doing the paying! Would I, as an empty nester now, or when the kids were smaller, spend boo-hoo bucks on a Phineus and Ferb Land? Nope, no way. The connection for us and our own childhoods is what makes us more likely to spend our money on.

There is nothing wrong with going with the classics. The problem is that when they try to capitalize on the newest movies by making an attraction, that movie is not as relevant by the time the attraction is done. But the classics, to me at least, never get old. And these are the movies I grew up with since most of my childhood was in the 90's. But I'm introducing those movies to DS now, so they are all new to him. He is almost 2 and LOVES Beauty & the Beast! I don't know if it's the music or the Beast or what, but that kid won't sit still for anything else. When that movie is on, he's captivated! So as he gets older, he will love being able to go inside the Beast's Castle and eat at Be Our Guest. It will all be new and wonderful to him. They are better off going with the classics that have stood the test of time than trying to capitalize on the current fad.

OP, that "ka-ching" noise you hear is the millions of people every year who disagree with you.

Is anyone else giggling over the fact that the OP is complaining about how Disney holds on to "classic" rides too long but has "We just LOVE IASW!" in his signature?

It is also true that Disney is not all about the children. It's also about the adults remembering those movies and attractions.

Very true. Disney is for kids of all ages, not just the young ones. So, even if little Susie doesn't know The Little Mermaid, Susie's parents might and they would love to see the attraction.

While I generally agree that some attractions/themes at WDW are "dated", I think their appeal, especially to first/second timers, is undiminished. We are seeing second and now third generation WDW guests, folks who enjoyed it as a kid and are now anxious to have their grand children have a similar experience. This can only be done if most of the experience, if not identical, is at least similar.

Plus Disney is in another "slump", where their movie titles are not getting the critical acclaim they got in the 80s/early 90s and like they got in the 40s. There are certainly titles that just stand out. Pixar has done this for several films as well. Anyone want to see a "Bolt" ride? If it was a good ride, sure, why not? But the theme needs to be a draw as well.

And what do they show on the Disney channel? I always figured that was the pipeline Disney uses to push the parks. They can keep their older stable of films in the minds eye by running them on TV to make sure little kids are up to date on princesses and such.

As an adult I mostly want new experiences, but can enjoy the "comfort rides". But since those comfort rides are different for everyone WDW is always in a bad spot with any change. The only things they can easily swap out are the newer attractions that no one has gotten nostalgically attacted to yet. But I bet there are kids out there with special memories of Kimpossible or Alien Encounters that will be sad to come back and find it gone.

I am thrilled about the New Fantasyland! I think they are bringing classics to life:goodvibes

With that being said, I agree with OP on Ellen, now it is sooo old. I still love it, but it really does need some updating. Capt EO, well that needs to go for sure. My family LOVES Indiana Jones. The show is amazing every time, but I would love to see a new show. They have done such an amazing job with the current one, and for anyone who has never seen it before it was AWESOME, as it still is for us, we would just like to see something new. Also, we really really wish they would totally overhaul the Backlot Tour.

I disagree. Additions like Kim Possible, High School Musical, and Phineas and Ferb inevitably prove to be temporary, whereas the classics are timeless.
Couldn't agree more. HSM and Kim Possible are basically already out of the parks, and I'm sure in a few years Phineas and Ferb will join them.

I'm actually glad to see new attractions based on classics, and I grew up with Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid. Though that might say something about my age if I've started considering the movies I grew up with classics. :rotfl:

Disney holds onto things WAY to long.
I know the new "land" in MK is going to be great YEA, but really. Beast , lil mermaid,,,,sigh. Movies from the 90's. These movies are almost 20 years old.
Would have loved keeping Mickeys house, and adding the cars land.:):thumbsup2 BRING BACK MICKEYS HOUSE. My kids now ask, "where do Mickey, Minnie and Donald sleep? "At animal kingdom lodge I guess! "

I could not disagree more. By your theory/idea, I guess they should say goodbye to Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Donald.

Beauty and the beast and the little mermaid..these are all classics..and the movies that were a huge part of my childhood..I'm 29 now and do not have children but alot of my friends do..its going to be a great place for this generation to show their children what they loved as kids..

I'm with you there! I'm also 29, no kids, and these were part of my childhood. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, and yes, I had to buy the 3D version when it came out! These are as much of a classic as Peter Pan and Cinderella! The Peter Pan ride at MK is outdated but it's still a ride I have to ride everytime and a ride I rode as a child!

I don't think it's any coincidence that just about time the kids who grew up on BATB and LM have kids of their own......... they get a big nod in the parks. Looks like perfect timing from a marketing standpoint if you ask me.

Mickey's home is at Disneyland.

His residence in WDW's Toontown was his "holiday" home.

Kinda ironic though.... If I recall correctly their "Holiday" home's were built before the "Official" home in California.

I still remember visiting Mickey's Birthdayland the year it opened.... and then being surprised when it still existed as Mickey's Starland the next year.

popcorn::popcorn:: Sometimes its fun to open a can of worms, sit back and enjoy some popcorn.

I would just like to see some new lands with new movies. Classics yes thats what makes Disney , well Disney. I never said get rid of lil mermaid, nor Beast, did I?

My point, seeing from millions and millions of other posters , bring some new ideas to WDW. Avatar hasnt made it yet. How about a cars land, and IM not talking about TV shows, rather movies. Meet the Robinsons, that could be a cool ride. Pixar and Disney has many more options they could dip into. WALL-E ,man that could be FUN! Not, just hold onto the same old lil mermaid, beast concept. They have shows already and attractions themed to those characters already. Did I say throw away Mickey, lil Mermaid, Donald etc, HECK NO. That is what makes Disney, Disney.

Also, how can we tell kids what are great movies. Everyone is saying OUR childhood OUR childhood. They are great. What will the kids from 2000's have, " O I remember WALL-E, etc, man those where some great memories."(in the year 2025) We are trying to hold onto our childhood with movies we watched, but what about them. In ten years what will they have to remember their childhood?

IMHO , i would just to have seen something else built.

PS, for my kids, they are not into the lil mermaid , beast thing. Thats just my kids. My DD never cared for the princess girl stuff, thats just her. To my kids its just more princess, kids under 10, expansion. Just our likes and dislikes, dont flame us for our likes and dislikes. Would like to see a more teen adult thrill rides etc. BUT AGAIN, DONT GET RID OF MICKEY!!! how could you!
