So you could sign up for volunteer opportunities starting yesterday on the Disney website. However, the website kept crashing all day due to the high volume of traffic. Is anyone really surprised? :confused3

I'm not surprised, but when I checked it out, it worked fine for me. I was kind of surprised by what they were offering though. In my area, the first page or so had everything from helpers with walks for veterans to organizing advertizing campaigns for local theatre groups to in-classroom tutoring to greeting and helpline positions at the local LBGT center.

I was really surprised to see the first thing pop up for our area is our local elementary school doing their school yard clean up!?!? It is only scheduled for 2 hours - I didn't read all the details - so would those 2 hours be the "give a day requirement"??

i searched on my sister's zipcode (she lives in bloomfield hills) - i came up with 140 possibilities!!
i really think it's a nice idea!!!

we're going to WDW together in June, so maybe she can get a day free...she volunteers all the time, for just about every possible cause you can think of...i have to go through the list and see if any of it is appropriate for her...

i can't participate as i live overseas...

i've been reading through the ones that came up for my sister's zip code - they must be the same as for you...i see the advertising campaign for the local theatre....tutoring....welcome desk and various and sundry other things for the ferndale community center....

but there's one there that i would totally love to do...but oddly, i'm not old enough...it claims the minimum age is 55....horse's haven....
i would love doing that...and not just for a day.....

but it really is an odd mix of things to do...
i just found a good one - hospice volunteer...
another one - make-a -wish is looking for volunteers....but by the description, it's really for more than just a day....i guess they're hoping people will volunteer for this disney thing and then stay on more permanently...

i keep reading through them...they've included toledo ohio....how exactly do they consider toledo within the realm of possibilities for someone living in suburban detroit????????????????

I wondered this, too. But it seems as if it does. :)

I was floored to find that something I'm already doing for work is on the list. So I get credit for work and for Disney, lol. Killing two birds there. :teeth:

I signed up today. There is a note on the homepage about website delays, so they are quite aware of the problem.

I was surprised at the lack of opportunities for families with small children. Out of over 150 choices in our area (100 mile radius in and around Greater Cleveland!) only 2 were options for us. The rest had age requirements of 10 or older. I get that a lot of the member organizations don't have activities that are appropriate for little kids, but I would have thought that working with Disney parks (places designed for kids of all ages!) would mean that families of all ages would be able to participate. Maybe they could have sought out other worthy organizations that would work well with the Disney brand?? :confused3 We are making blankets for Project Linus. I'm a quilter, DH learned to sew in college and my kids have made fleece no-sew blankets before so we may have chosen this group anyway. It might have been nice to teach the kids about soup kitchens or homeless shelters though...

I checked and everything for us is already full! So I guess I'll have to keep checking regularly till new events open up or are posted. I couldn't believe how fast that happened, but I think this will be pretty popular in California because it is easy for people to go down to Disneyland and take advantage of a free day.

I can't wait to hear about what everyone gets to do- I am looking forward to signing up- when I can!

I checked yesterday too, and the site was working fine then, but I am not surprised at all that it crashed.

I got a response back from each of the groups I showed interest in.

One was simple and straight forward.

The other; however, couldn't me farther from it. And it seems as though the organizer isn't caught up to date or not on board with the program.

I haven't been successful finding anything for my family yet -- hoping they will add more opportunties soon.

We're waiting on confirmation for ours. We're gonna pull weeds & pick up trash for 5 hours along a walking trail. Hope we get to wear those cool orange vests. :rotfl:

I have 165 pages of opportunities to go through. The next time I am going to WDW for sure is Jan 2011 which is after the voucher is good for but I am still deciding on heading down for the Wine & Dine half marathon so I will be doing it just in case. I figure worst case scenario I earn some karma points even if I can't use the ticket.
