disney gift cards

I bought 80 $50 cards with the 20% discount in November. I took the cards to a customer service person, who called the manager to help. I didn't want to hold up a check-out line if there was a problem. I had the Redcard debit card at the time (since switched to the credit card after the data breach--seemed safer). She rang up all the cards, and then it wouldn't go through because the $3100+ was so high. I had enough money in my account. She had me call the bank from her phone, they verified that I had more than enough money and said it must be Target's issue. So the manager then called some Target number for help/an override. They kept trying, but it didn't work. Then they told her I'd have to buy fewer at a time and do multiple transactions so each one wouldn't be so high. The manager didn't want to do that (neither did I since it took a long time to enter all 80 cards and we didn't want to start over), but then she decided to let me use my Disney visa (which gave me the extra 1%) and just deducted the 5% I would have gotten if I'd used my Redcard. So I actually ended up with a better deal! So anyway, I'd be prepared to go directly to customer service rather than a checkout line, because I'm pretty sure it WILL be a problem to buy 120 cards at one time even though you have enough money in your account. But you should be able to do it if you're patient! Good luck!! I sure felt it was worth the trouble for the savings!:):):)

Where did you hear it is $10 off at Giant Eagle? They do sell online but I also have family that lives near them that I can send. I just want to be positive before I send her out in the cold! :)
Saw the discount at BJ's this morning, you get a better deal buying more $50 ones than you do the $150. Just more of a PITA.
Thanks!

Thanks so much! Is it 5 new scripts or do refills count? Congrats on your savings too! I wouldn't need that many b/c I'm hoping beyond hope they have free dining this fall but would be great to get a few for souveniers. Too bad they can't be used to pay off my Disney Visa.....or can they?

I dont believe so. (I have the DISvisa too) But you can use the GC's to pay off your WDW vacations and your room tab. If you only put down that minimum to hold your reservation, then you can pay off the rest of the vacay using GC's. (If you do the Target card purchase then you can get an extra 5% off ur vacay!) If you are staying on site you can go to the concierge the day bf you leave and pay down your room tab/bill w the cards too... I ask for gift cards for every birthday and holiday! lol

:offtopic:
They probably will do free dining. I think the promo came out last year around June-ish? Someone will correct me if I am wrong. lol However we aren't big eaters so we find it cheaper to rent DVC points and use garden grocer for snacks, etc. We got a DVC rental at Boardwalk for a week in Oct for the same price as rack rate for All Star Movies. (which is how you are paying for the DDP) But that's just our family... LOTS of people love free dining! And that's totally off topic at this point :crazy2:

Thanks for info onnusing gift cards toboay for ressie. I'm tempted! If it was just me and a friend I would not do free dining. I'm wanting to take my sis and her family. So 3 adults and 3 kids. The cheapest way onsite will work for me is 2 rooms. I'll pony up a little more to stay at Pop vs All Stars. The kiddos want to do character dining and based on those prices (at least ones I found online...they could have been outdated), it is cheaper to do dining plan. I would love info on DVC rental though. If I can get a suite that sleeps 6 for value prices I might change my mind. When I looked previously though I didn't see any deals like that.

Thanks!

I am looking at my Giant Eagle ad for this week right now it says

"Spend $100 or more on the select retailer gift cards and get $10.00 OFF YOU NEXT SHOPPING TRIP Offer valid 2/27/14-3/12/14 Giant Eagle Advantage Card must be scanned at time of purchase and a your coupon will be issued at checkout."

So you don't get $10 off the $100 but rather a coupon for $10 off your next shopping visit. If you shop there regularly (which I do) it seems to be a pretty good deal. I am assuming that you also get 10 cents of Fuel Perks for every $50 in gift cards you buy.

It says there is a limit of one coupon per transaction, so I guess I will be checking out more then once ;)

Hope this helps

I just saw this too!

I love gift cards!! I buy one a week at my grocery store (Kroger's) and save $1.00 off a gallon. Ends up being $15 of free gas every fill up!

I bring them with me and pay off the room charges every night. It is like a Disney Dining Plan but with less strings attached!

I got the Target Redcard specifically to buy the Disney GC with the 5% discount. My family doesn't get enough prescriptions in a year to get the pharmacy discount. I'm going to use them to let my kids buy their souvenirs and for any extra costs that pop up during our trip.

I don't go to target really ever-would it be silly to get a target card to buy gift cards with? I have a Disney visa (which I always totally pay off). Would it be smarter to get a target card and use that to buy gcs or use my Disney visa to buy gcs?

I'm not the best at math but I believe the Target Red Card is the way to go, unless you have a reason to not want to open another credit card--I believe your credit score is affected every time you open a new card, although over time paying it off in full each month helps your credit score. Anyway:

I believe the Target Card is free. So if you use it to get $100 worth of gift cards, you pay $95 for $100 in GCs. You don't need to go to Target; you can buy 10 at a time online.

I believe that the regular Disney Visa is also free. But if you use it to get $100 worth of gift cards you pay $100 for $101 in GCs, and that last $1 is actually on a separate card that you have to request from Chase--the redemption card.

The Disney Premier Visa is $49/ year. It earns 2%, so you need to charge $2450/year before your rewards are "free". But once you do that, you're still paying $100 for $102 in GCs, the last $2 of which are on the separate redemption card.

I got the Disney Premier in the beginning of the month. We charge a lot, so I'm only a few hundred away from breaking even. But I'm still not using it to buy gift cards because it's cheaper to buy them from Target using my RedCard.

I never realized I could purchase the gift cards with my red card. Thanks for that. One question though. If I do it this way, can I still book a hotel / ticket package at the non discounted rate and therefore get the free dining promo if it is offered? And then pay my balance due off with the gift cards?

Thanks for any insight.

I asked a friend of mine that is a travel agent this question last night. She said you can use gift cards to pay off ressies as long as it is at least a $20 gift card. I haven't tried this myself buy I might start!

So it's worth it and wouldn't negatively affect my credit score (as long as I'm paying it all off on time) to get a red card just to buy gift cards? Does it make a difference if it's a debit or credit version of the red card? TIA!!

Thanks for the quick answers. I missed out on the ebates deal. Need something that will give me a savings of any kind now.

I think every application negatively affect a credit score but is it very slight. I think you more than make up for it by then using the card for a period of time and paying timely.

I am almost certain that you do get the discount with a Target Red debit card because I remember a discussion about people not knowing their limit (which makes no sense to me because one would think that the only limit is the amount, of funds in your account, but that is a different discussion! )
