Disney Gift Cards versus Cash

I read that thread. I do not register off the shelf cards, I register themed ones direct from the Disney website and don’t add balances until trip time. In any case it’s always good to have copies of your numbers and at least one blank one registered so that you can transfer as soon as you notice one has gone missing. It seems I read almost daily about people losing cards and having to take the loss. Keeping a blank registered as a precaution is the easiest/fastest way to hopefully recoup.
The OP of that thread had registered an old GC she had lying around and transferred all of her GCs to it. It sounds like she left the GC with $ on it in the account (probably to continue adding to it). When she logged on n recently, the balance was zero. It sounds as if her Disney gift card .com account was hacked and the balance was transferred to a card the thief used.

I know, I read the thread. I’m not advising anyone to keep large amounts of money registered. I’m suggesting a blank card registered when they DO have money on a card so they can make a quick transfer if it goes missing. Accounts of all kinds get hacked, it’s up to each person to decide what they’re comfortable with.

I'm so impressed with all the savings you all have from using gift cards. I just can't do it. I am a commitment-phobe; I don't want Disney to have my money whether I end up taking the trip or not. You can't get your money back.

You can't get all your money back. You could sell the gift cards on a 3rd party gift card exchange website. You'd lose a chunk of the money the cards are worth, but if you did a good job a getting them for below cost, the overall true financial hit would be small. And yes, still less than liquid as you'd have to wait for the process to complete before you had the cash in hand.

I'm in a Dollar Tree and Kroger area. I dont even know what BJ's is. Could you explain what you mean about the gas points and how that relates to buying the gift cards? And what a Visa green dot is? I also have a Target debit. Just trying to figure out how to start this whole gift card savings thing.
We really like visa green dot cards. They are prepaid reloadable visa cards. The reason I just buy new ones is they are at dollar tree. The reload them it cost 4.00 so stupid I know. But I can use the money for anything from priceline hotels etc. We do have some disney giftcards my dh did not like having it all tied up in one place in case of emergancy. ( or it would be disneystore christmas)

On the blank card thing, my 13 year old daughter is on a school trip and lost her gift card right out of the (probably literally) gate. She called me and I quick transferred to the blank one she had stashed in her backpack. *whew* Oy, this girl though. :faint:

I see alot of different posts about the gift card savings 5% and im tryn to decide if its something i want to try. How much trouble is it to carry a bunch of cards and keep track of balances. From what i can see, the actual savings is very little, maybe $50-$100 by using these so is really worth it or is most people using these because they dont want to use cash. I use my 1 bank debit card for everything, is it worth the hassle to go from 1 card to several different to save $50?

Of course! You usually end up learning how to save more when you start paying attention to the little money.

There are card sites where you can sell your cards.

On Ebay it's almost dollar for dollar...
You could buy walmart cards then buy your tickets at samsclub
